Item Retention Times
Managing a TRANSFER System

You configure cleanup TAREQs in the DEFINETR file, explained in Section 5.
Cleanup TAREQS do not replace regular TAREQs. Regular TAREQs must always be
configured.
Be sure to adjust the number of TISERV-ASYNC and TWORK servers to compensate
for the extra TAREQs.
Item Retention Times You can manage the disk space and scheduling resources used by TRANSFER by
managing item retention time. Item retention time affects resource use as follows:
The use of disk space decreases as item retention time decreases.
The use of TRANSFER scheduling resources increases when item retention times
are specified.
Set item retention times to balance the effects of resource use.
Item retention time can be controlled at the following levels:
As a depot profile attribute that sets the maximum item retention time that can be
specified for either individual items or for folders at the depot
As a folder attribute that controls retention time for items saved in the folder
without specifying a retention time
For individual items when they are saved in folders
You must have system administrative write privileges to set the depot profile element
for maximum item retention times. Because the value of the depot attribute is under
the system administrator’s control, the administrator can use that value as a constraint
to control item storage.
By initializing the model depot and model group depot with appropriate attributes for
system usage and by using the model depot to create correspondent depots and the
model group depot to create interest groups, you can control the correspondents’ and
groups’ use of the system because correspondent and group depots inherit all the
attributes from the depot from which they are created.
Note Items are discarded with no notification to users. Messages that they might have filed for later use
disappear when item retention time expires.
