TRANSFER Installation and Management Guide

The TRANSFER Database and Depots
Introduction

Once a correspondent has sent a package, TRANSFER is responsible for seeing that
each local and remote recipient receives it. At each node, a TRANSFER scheduler
keeps track of packages to ensure that they are scheduled for delivery.
When packages have been scheduled for delivery, TRANSFER asynchronous
requesters see that packages are actually delivered to each recipient. If a package
cannot be delivered, the sender is notified of the failure to deliver to that recipient.
The TRANSFER Database
and Depots
TRANSFER maintains a database, which includes definitions of the various objects
belonging to a correspondent. Each correspondent has one depot. The depot is
created when the correspondent is registered with TRANSFER. A depot includes
profiles, folders, and distribution lists that belong to the correspondent:
Depot profiles are the correspondent descriptions that are stored in a depot.
Profiles contain information used by the TRANSFER delivery system and its
agents and clients.
The TRANSFER depot profile includes standard information about the
correspondent, such as a password and default delivery information.
Client profiles include information used by the TRANSFER clients for the
correspondent, such as the name of the default formatter and editor programs.
Clients are requester programs that provide the interface between
correspondents and TRANSFER. The client directs requests to the
TRANSFER interactive server through the TRANSFER IPC interface. Every
TRANSFER application requires at least one client.
PS MAIL 6530, PS MAIL 3270, PS MAIL TTY, and the ADMIN and
TMANAGER programs are all TRANSFER clients.
An agent profile includes selection criteria for each agent that is assigned to
the depot.
Agents are SCREEN COBOL programs or PATHWAY server classes that are
automatically invoked to handle packages received at a depot. Multiple
agents can be assigned to a depot to take different actions for different types of
packages. The same agent can be assigned to more than one depot.
User-defined profiles include information about the correspondent for
programs designed by Tandem users.
Folders are the places where packages are stored in a depot. In addition to the
folders automatically created and maintained by TRANSFER, a correspondent can
define other folders for a depot.
Distribution lists are predefined lists of recipients for packages. A distribution
list, which provides a simple method for sending a package to multiple
destinations, belongs to the correspondent who creates it; however, any
correspondent can use any distribution list.
