Using ADMIN to
Administer a
TRANSFER System
Administrative functions within the TRANSFER environment are performed through
the ADMIN program. ADMIN provides three types of access to TRANSFER,
depending on the administrative privileges granted to the user:
Administrators with write privileges
Users with system administrative write privileges can create and delete any
correspondent, interest group (except the PUBLIC group), folder (except the
permanent special folders like the INBOX and the OUTLOG), or distribution list
on the node. In addition, this type of user can read the attributes of any
correspondent, interest group, folder, or distribution list and has the authority to
modify many of these attributes. They cannot read the contents of others’
packages.
Each node must have at least one user, usually called the system administrator,
with system administrative write privileges to register other users as any of these
three types.
Administrators with read privileges
Users with system administrative read privileges can examine, but not change,
the attributes of any correspondent’s or interest group’s depot. They cannot read
the contents of others’ packages.
Correspondents
Regular users, without system administrative privileges, can perform only certain
functions that pertain to their own depots, such as creating and deleting their own
folders and distribution lists, examining the attributes of their own depots, and
modifying some of those attributes. Every user of a TRANSFER client is registered
as a TRANSFER correspondent.
As the system manager, you have system administrative write privileges. There are
certain ADMIN values that only you should change. While the system administrator
can handle most of the administrative tasks involving correspondents’ daily use of
TRANSFER, you are responsible for system control functions.
