TRANSFER, with its X400 gateway, allows clients to send packages of any type to
X400 recipients. If the package is a mail-type package, with an item-type value of 109
through 114, the gateway generates the P1 and P2 protocols using the data in the
TRANSFER database. If the package has any other value for the item type, the
gateway does not generate the P2 protocol, but instead simply sends the item data or
external-object data as the content of a P1 message.
Although both P1 messages and P2 messages can contain information about recipients,
the P1 recipients are the ones who receive messages through the TRANSFER X400
gateway. Because the P1 protocol is the one used for routing messages, only the
recipients defined in P1 are used for delivery.
