Character Sets
National Language and Character Set Support

Character Sets Just as you can select a native language other than English, you can also select
character sets. You can do either of the following:
Use the standard base character set and name character set and a set of character
maps supplied by Tandem.
Specify different base and name character sets and different character maps.
(Tandem supplies two base character sets and a number of character maps from
which to choose.)
The capability for alternate character sets and maps works together with TRANSFER
national language support to permit the translation of messages generated by the
TRANSFER delivery system. This capability also provides a method for letting users
address each other using their precise correspondent names—even if the sender's
keyboard does not provide all characters that appear in the recipient's name.
Similarly, it allows correspondents to refer to distribution lists and folders whose
names contain characters unavailable on their keyboards.
Note If you are programming in a TRANSFER software system where everyone uses English and sits at
terminals with ASCII-based character mapping, you will probably not need to read further in this section.
(This applies whether your TRANSFER system is running only on one node or over several nodes.) On
the other hand, if people at your site use a language other than English or work at terminals with
character mapping other than US ASCII, you should continue reading.
