TRANSFER Programming Manual
Appendix C Standard TRANSFER Base
Character Set
40970 Tandem Computers Incorporated C–1
The standard base (canonical) character set for TRANSFER includes all graphic
characters and format effectors in both the ANSI (1977) and ISO 8859/1.2 standards.
With regard to these standards, TRANSFER makes the following choices:
Code %H27 is identified as a right single quote ('). This character is assumed to be
the same as the apostrophe. It is not the same as the acute accent (´), which is code
%HB4 in the ISO standard.
Code %H60 is identified as a grave accent (`). This is the ISO preference.
The ASCII preference, the left single quote (‘), is allocated code %H7F.
This map also contains most IBM PC characters that are not present in either the ASCII
or ISO standards, including:
Currency unit symbols
Superscripts
Mathematical symbols (except the two-symbol representation of the integral sign)
Greek letters
Single-line box graphics
National alphabetic characters in the Danish/Norwegian alternative set
The CODE-PAGE-ID for this map is 65300. The CODE-SET-ID is 0. The error
character in the map, which replaces any national code character for which mapping
fails, is the asterisk. The base (canonical) code for the asterisk is %H2A.
The tables in this appendix indicate whether characters are members of the ASCII
or ISO character sets and include the following information for each character in the
standard base (canonical) character set:
The base code (in hexadecimal notation)
The master character list code (in hexadecimal notation)
The character, a description of the character, or both, as appropriate
Note Character sets cannot be changed on a TRANSFER system without requiring reconversion of the
TRANSFER database.
Use characters from the categories ranging from TRANSFER reserved symbols
through pictures (base codes %H80 through %H9C) first when you substitute
alternate characters. Note that the Hebrew alphabet can be placed in the region
occupied by these categories.
