The folder-level default retention time assumes the value specifically assigned for this
parameter in the depot profile, which may be different from the value assigned for the
depot-level maximum retention time. In other words, folders created with the
CREATE-FOLDER, CREATE-FOLDER B00, and CREATE-FOLDER B10 UOWs receive
an item retention time default equal to the folder-level constraint.
By default, the unsave time for items saved with the SAVE-ITEM, SAVE-ITEM-B00,
and SAVE-ITEM-BY-KEY UOWs equals the default item retention time for the folder.
Conflicting Values
If the unsave time specified for an individual item or the default item retention time
specified for a folder exceeds the current value at the depot level, the value is reduced
to the depot constraint and the warning W-TIME-TOO-LONG (-4269) is issued.
If the unsave time specified for an item exceeds the item retention time specified at the
folder level, the time specified for the item is still used. Individual items within a
folder can have unsave times that exceed the folder default.
You can change the item retention time default for a folder without emptying the
folder. Items already in the folder retain their original unsave times.
Special Folders
The INBOX folder, the OUTLOG folder, and the WASTEBASKET folder are special
folders.
INBOX FOLDER. The INBOX folder is created with an item retention time value equal to
that of the INBOX in the depot that was used as a model. In the model depot supplied
by Tandem, this value is infinite (the same as the depot constraint). Packages
delivered into the INBOX are subject to the INBOX item retention time as though they
had been explicitly saved; however, the retention time in effect for packages delivered
into the INBOX is independent of package expiration times. The time at which an item
is deleted according to its retention time can come before, concurrently with, or after
the time at which the item expires.
OUTLOG Folder. The OUTLOG is created with an item retention time equal to the value
for the OUTLOG in the depot that was used as a model. The value in the standard
model depot supplied by Tandem is 24 hours. The OUTLOG behaves like other
folders with respect to item retention time.
WASTEBASKET Folder. The WASTEBASKET is created with a default item retention
time of infinity. If you attempt to change this with the ALTER-FOLDER-DESCR
UOW, an E-INVALID-FOLDER error is returned. Depot-level retention times do not
apply to items in the WASTEBASKET; when a session ends, all WASTEBASKET
messages are deleted. You can, however, specify unsave times for individual items
saved in the WASTEBASKET.
