Configuration
Concepts
Every Virtual TapeServer is delivered with a preconfigured number of licensed connections.
Adding virtual libraries and cartridges enables you to use the Virtual TapeServer. Tools are
provided to modify the Virtual TapeServer default configurations.
Before configuring Virtual TapeServer, have this information available:
• Virtual TapeServer bus ID numbers to which the different hosts are connected
• Virtual TapeServer bus ID numbers to which the different tape drives and libraries are
connected
• SCSI ID numbers of all hosts (use the factory-preset default of 5), tape drives, and
libraries
• Appropriate naming scheme for different hosts, tape drives, and libraries
Note: Virtual TapeServer’s bus IDs are marked on the SCSI ports on the back of the unit.
To simplify setup, use this sequence. Complete setup for every host, tape drive, and library
connected to Virtual TapeServer:
1. Modify a physical tape that uses the RAID definition.
2. Modify an existing logical tape.
3. Modify an existing virtual tape.
4. Add the tape connection.
Physical Tape Drives
For Virtual TapeServer, a physical tape is a connection to a physical disk array.
Defining Physical Tapes
Your physical tape drives are configured at the factory, based on the number available under
your license. However, you can choose from a variety of icons to graphically represent the tape
drives. To define tapes with icons:
1.
Select Manage Connections > Manage Tape Connections.
2.
Select Tape Definitions > Edit Existing Tape Definition.
3.
Select the tape type you want to modify and click Edit. The default is RAID.
4.
Click the button for the icon you prefer, and click Update.
Modifying Logical Tapes
Virtual TapeServer arrives with two, four, eight, or twelve predefined logical tapes, depending
upon the model. However, you can edit, delete, or create new logical tapes as needed.
Depending on the application, at least a one-to-one relationship must exist between physical
tapes and logical tapes. To modify logical tapes:
1.
Select Manage Connections > Manage Tape Connections.
2.
Select Delete a Tape Connection and select the tape connection that uses the logical tape
to be modified
.
Click Delete Tape Connection and return to Manage Tape
Connections.
