VTS Fibre Channel Upgrade
Replacing SCSI Adapter(s) with Fibre Channel Adapter(s) on
the VTS Proliant Server Models
Note: These instructions are for VTS release level 06.03.37 which is the
minimum supported release for Fibre Channel Virtual Tape Drives.
This procedure provides instructions to swap out one or more SCSI cards from a VTS Proliant
server and replace them with the same number of VTS supported Fibre Channel cards.
Differences between hardware platforms (VT5900-A, VT5900-C /VT5901, and VT5902 are
noted in Step 2 and 4.
Step 1: Shut Down VTS
A.
From a terminal window on the VTS, login in as root.
B.
Type mount for a list of all VTS Vaults.
C.
Use the umount /VAULTxx command (where xx is the Vault number) to un-mount a Vault.
Repeat command for each vault on the system until all Vaults are un-mounted.
D.
Type mount from the VTS terminal window. There should be no Vaults mounted.
E.
From the terminal window on the VTS, use the vi editor to open the /etc/fstab file. Comment out
all Vaults in the /etc/fstab file. Place a # symbol before each LABEL=/VAULT line to comment
out that Vault (example, # LABEL=/VAULT01). Repeat until all Vaults are commented out
.
F.
Exit the vi editor and save all changes
.
G.
From the NonStop server, stop all VTS tape drives using the SCF STOP $tapename command.
H.
Power down all the VTS HVD/LVD SCSI Converter Modules using the switch on the rear of each
unit.
I.
From a terminal window on the VTS, type halt. When the display returns System Halted, power
down the VTS Proliant DL585 using the power button on the front of the unit.
Step 2: Remove the SCSI card(s) and install the Fibre Channel card(s)
A.
From the rear of the VTS, mark each SCSI cable with the port position it is attached to. This will
make it easier to reattach them to the correct SCSI ports later.
B.
Disconnect all the SCSI cables from all SCSI adapters for easier access to the adapter cards.
Disconnect the Proliant power cords as a precaution.
C.
If the VTS is mounted in a rack enclosure, loosen the front pull-tabs and slide the server out so
that the top cover can be opened. Do not remove the Proliant from the rails holding it to the
enclosure, as the server is heavy. If there is a stabilizer foot of the rack enclosure, make sure it is
extended so the enclosure does not tip forward
.
D.
Open the VTS Proliant server top cover, remove, and set aside
.
E.
Look inside the Proliant server, to where the SCSI and Fibre adapters are located
VT5900-A
1) You will see a shipping bracket secured with a quick-disconnect pull tab that you need to release to
remove the shipping bracket. Once the shipping bracket is removed, you can access the blue tabs that
lock/unlock the SCSI and Fibre Channel cards.
2) There is a very specific order in which one or more SCSI cards are to be removed. This order must be
followed or the upgrade will not work. Every VTS Proliant DL585 has SCSI and Fibre Channel cards in
the same physical slots. There will always be Fibre Channel cards in slots 5 and 6. You will see slot
numbers on the chassis above each slot. These numbers are visible both on the inside and the outside
of the chassis (outside picture below). The following order of SCSI card removal must be followed:
