Virtual TapeServer 6.02.00 Installation Guide
HP Virtual TapeServer Installation Guide 6 HP Part Number 528654-006 Sept 2006
Installation Considerations
For efficient installation of a Virtual TapeServer, complete these preparations before
service personnel arrive on location:
• Identify physical space in a 19-inch rack for Virtual TapeServer hardware within a
short distance of the NonStop server:
- Allow 2Us (3.5 inches) for a VT5900-B or VT5900-C and 4Us (7.0 inches)
for a 5900-A. VT5905 RAID unit uses 4Us and VT5906 RAID extensions
use 3Us of rack space.
• Identify available processor multifunction (PMF), input/output multifunction
(IOMF), ServerNet device adapter SCSI connection locations or FCSA Fibre
Channel connection locations.
• Use cables that are long enough to reach between the host and Virtual
TapeServer. Host cables are not included with Virtual TapeServer. For more
information about cable length limitations, refer to Cabling and Connections on
page 8.
• Provide sufficient 110 volt (220/240 volt outside the USA) power outlets. Virtual
TapeServer server modules use redundant power supplies, so consider
independent power sources for high-availability operation. Additional power
outlets might be required for import/export tape drives or RAID storage devices.
• Secure a monitor and keyboard for temporary use during installation. Virtual
TapeServer does not require a monitor or keyboard for normal operation.
However, it is recommended that you connect a monitor and keyboard when
rebooting the system.
• Connect a CAT-5 Ethernet cable to the Virtual TapeServer server module from
the customer network.
• Identify TCP/IP information to assign to Virtual TapeServer:
- Fully qualified domain name
- IP address
- Subnet mask
- Default router (gateway)
- DNS or DHCP addresses with Virtual TapeServer name entered
• Identify a PC with Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer 6.0 that can be used
to access the IP address provided for Virtual TapeServer.
• Know how to add, configure, and use tape devices in NonStop server
environments with compression set to OFF.
• Know how to add users in NonStop server operating system environments.
