4. To confirm that the physical tape device(s) was created and communicating in the
operating system, go to the Linux text console and enter the following command:
mt -f path_to_drive status
Note This step is applicable for physical tape drives only, not libraries.
For example, you could enter mt -f /dev/st0 status. Here is a sample of the output from
this command:
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=-1, block number=-1, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x0 (default).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (50000):
DR_OPEN IM_REP_EN
Repeat for each tape drive that was added.
Configuring migration
The first step in configuring migration depends on whether a BMA is installed in your
environment:
If a BMA is installed in your environment, you can install and configure the BMA client
on the VTS server. Refer to the BMA product documentation for more information, or
contact your authorized service and support representative to request assistance. After
installing and configuring the BMA client, you must modify the VTS configuration file to
configure migration, which entails configuring the hsm_ parameters.
If no BMA is installed in your environment, the first step in configuring migration is to
license TSM from your authorized VTS service and support representative. After TSM is
licensed and installed in your VTS environment, you must modify the VTS configuration
file to configure migration, which entails configuring the hsm_ parameters for TSM.
Note A default configuration file is defined for each VTS server. To override the default
settings, you must define settings as described below. Technically, you do not edit the
VTS configuration file; you simply define parameters that override those set in the
configuration file.

To modify the VTS configuration file to configure migration
1. Click Supervisor Functions on the navigation pane of the VTS interface.
2. Click Edit VTS Configuration File.
