Administrative Tasks
This appendix describes several tasks that are performed from time-to-time as needed.
Maintaining mounts and locks
If EMS was enabled, the process of mounting virtual tapes is automated; the NonStop server
can initiate mounts and dismounts. (For details, see
Configuring EMS Communication on
page 37.) When VTS detects a mount request, it checks to see if the requested virtual tape
resides on a RAID array connected to VTS. If it does, that virtual tape is mounted on the
device specified by the mount request. If no device is specified in the backup command, the
first available virtual tape drive connected to that host is used. After the virtual tape is
mounted, the backup proceeds automatically.
The Virtual Media - Mounts and Locks page enables you to monitor this activity. To display
this page, select mounts and locks from the window menu at the top of the Virtual Media
page. Viewing this page requires the Virtual Tape Mounts and Locks access right:
The top of the page shows the recent mount requests. Only mount requests that can be
handled by the server are displayed. You can also restart the EMS messaging service from
this page by clicking the RESTART button.
The bottom of the page shows current locks on pools and virtual tapes. Locks ensure that
virtual tapes are only accessed by one process at a time. Pools are locked when VTS needs
uninterrupted access to any of the cartridges in a pool. Under normal conditions, manual lock
