Introduction Virtual TapeServer (VTS) is a fully integrated virtual tape, hardware and software solution. VTS allows host systems to read from and write to a local or SAN-attached file system. Data is automatically migrated to a tape device based on policies or manually migrated to physical tape for archival storage or disaster recovery, if long-term backup copies are required.
• Data compression — Allows VTS to compress files as they are written to disk storage devices. Its use can double the available storage capacity and reduce the amount of associated storage costs. This feature uses an “on-the-fly” compression algorithm that creates little processor overhead and can increase performance and throughput by decreasing the volume of data written to disk.
Installation and Configuration This section describes how to access information about installing and configuring the release 6.04.02 of Virtual TapeServer (VTS). It also provides compatibility notes. Upgrades and updates If you are upgrading from 6.03.x, you must upgrade to 6.04.01 before upgrading to 6.04.02. Refer to the 6.04.01 Virtual TapeServer Release Notes and Operations and Administration Guide for information about upgrading to 6.04.01. To upgrade from 6.04.
Tape drive emulation VTS emulates the following tape drive types: IBM Ultrium 3580-TD1 IBM Ultrium 3580-TD3 IBM Ultrium 3580-TD4 Fujitsu M2483B HP Ultrium 1-SCSI Sony DSX-500C Quantum DLT7000 Quantum SDLT320 Compaq Network Services Division 5257 Backup management application support The following backup applications were tested and are supported for use with VTS: Symantec Veritas NetBackup 6.5 Syncsort Backup Express 3.0.1 IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 5.
Resolved Issues and Enhancements The following changes have been incorporated into the software since the 6.04.01 release. Hardware and configuration VTS is installed on the first available drive instead of the smallest. Previously, the VTS system was installed on the smallest available drive. Now, it is installed on the first available drive. (TL-2659) VTDs were not working on Fibre Channel ports. One or more Fibre Channel ports were not functioning due to initialization failures.
General operations Overwriting cartridges is slower than writing to new cartridges. Now, cartridges are erased before being reused. (TL-2985, EAR 5165) Could not accurately determine the amount of free space available to run multiple backups concurrently. Due to the truncate change in 6.04, you could not accurately determine the amount of free space for running multiple backups concurrently. This was because the unused cartridge space was not made available until a cartridge was overwritten (reused).
Incremental backups backed up unnecessary files. If a cinfo or vlabel command was issued from the command line, the change time for the file being accessed was changed. Additionally, if a pool was expanded on the Virtual Media page, the change time for cartridges in the pool was updated. These change time updates could have affected incremental backups by backing up unnecessary files, which use the change time to detect changes since the last full backup.
checkbox is checked in the EMS Configuration page. In addition, the “Enable Host Notifications” option must be checked because this enables sending notices of any type to the host. (Use “ems_hsm_backup_notification='YES'” if manually editing vts.conf.) (TL2975) Utilities Services that were started using the web interface are not restarted after logs are rotated. Previously, all processes started using the web interface were shutdown during the process of rotating logs. The processes were not restarted.
Known Issues The following known issues, or “errata,” apply to the 6.04.02 release. The issue tracking number is provided in parentheses. Refer to this number when making inquiries to Technical Support. There is a table of tracking numbers listed in ascending order, with the summary and document section number, in Issue Index on page 24. Hardware and configuration Starting a VTD on the NonStop results in two errors logged to debug.log.
General operations Duplicate cartridges are imported. It is possible to import duplicate cartridges by importing a pool of cartridges into a different pool; this was also true in earlier releases. (TL-3169) WORKAROUND: To prevent this problem, import a pool of cartridges into the same pool from which the cartridges were originally exported. To fix this problem if it occurs, delete the cartridges from the new pool and then re-import to the original pool.
Interrupt requests are disabled while VTS is idle. VTS may broadcast to all terminals that it is disabling unused interrupt requests (IRQs). This can occur on systems with an out-of-date BIOS, but the warnings may be safely ignored. (TL-1997) File size limit of 2TB can be overridden through the Pool Management page in the UI. If you set the virtual tape limit above 2TB, VTS will not get an EOM before the file system reaches the file limit and fails the I/O to VTS.
cartridges will result. This could cause other pools to disappear, cartridges to display incorrectly or not appear. (TL-1039) WORKAROUND: Review cartridges restored in this manner when there might be conflicts with existing cartridges. You can rename the cartridges from the command line (log in as the bill user) or delete duplicate cartridges. Using the Import/Export interface results in an error in encr_key.log.
Web interface VTD names and serial numbers should not be case-sensitive. When creating VTDs, the web interface checks the case of the specified VTD name and serial number. However, VTD names and serial numbers are not case-sensitive on the host server. For example, you can create VTAPE01 and vtape01 on the VTS server, but the host server only sees VTAPE01. (TL-3212) WORKAROUND: Do not specify VTD names or serial numbers that have the same combination of letters, no matter the case.
Backup of database fails if scheduling a backup. If you click Backup the database (Advanced) on the Administrator Utilities page and then click the Schedule button (after clicking Proceed), the backup will fail. (TL-240, EAR 4663) WORKAROUND: Back up the entire database and do not use the Advanced option. Retention time is not displayed correctly on Scan/Cleanup page. Retention is shown in weeks until retention time exceeds a year, then it is shown in years.
Cartridge Status pop-up dialog is not updated while a cartridge is mounted. If you display the Cartridge pop-up dialog by clicking a link in the size (MB) column of the Virtual Media - Operation page and then the cartridge is mounted, the data is not updated on the pop-up. (TL-2350) WORKAROUND: View this information when the cartridge is not mounted. Scan/Cleanup page performance is slow. Loading the Scan/Cleanup page is slow if a large number of cartridges exists.
Firefox shows negative values on the System Status page. If you are using the Firefox browser to view the VTS web interface, negative values may be displayed in the kb/sec column in the Connections table on the System Status page. (TL-347) Firefox improperly renders Cartridge Maintenance page when Multiple Select checkbox is unchecked.
SecureVTS cannot restore key database from remote server if backup file name contains a period. When trying to restore from a remote host, an error message similar to the following is generated if the backup file name contains a period. (TL-3168) Unable to restore backup because remote_host does not exist in the database. WORKAROUND: When specifying a file to be used for the destination for a remote backup of a key database, do not include a period in the file name.
Misleading, informative message is added to log file when an unencrypted cartridge is mounted. If SecureVTS is enabled and an unencrypted cartridge is mounted, a message similar to the following is added to the SecureVTS.log file: Tue Sep 30 09:22:14 2008: [statinfo:27849 vt] SecureVTS file mounted and key acquired This is an informative log file message; there is no error condition.
SecureVTS encryption operations performed when no key database backup host is configured causes the web interface to remain busy for up to 10 minutes. If SecureVTS encryption operations (creating an encrypted tape, encrypting an alreadyexisting tape) are attempted when no Key Database Backup/Restore Hosts are configured, the web interface will appear busy for up to 10 minutes before displaying an error message.
Cannot re-log in to the SecureVTS web interface using the Log In button. If you are logged in as a non-administrative user, you must close the browser window and log in again as an administrator to access SecureVTS functions. The Log In button on the interface will not log you in as another user. (TL-1033) SecureVTS automated key database backups do not log their backups to the event.log file. For details on automated backups, consult the ks_backup.log file.
VTSPolicy TSM Archive command for a vault results in an error message. Issuing a VTSPolicy TSM Archive command for a vault will fail to back up the vault. An error message such as “Error: /VAULT00 not on this system” will be written to the VTS log. (TL-221) WORKAROUND: A vault may be backed up by issuing VTSPolicy TSM Archive commands for the individual pools or cartridges in the vault. Scan/Cleanup Cartridges are not erased when expected if cleanup_autoerase is configured.
Fri Nov 07 14:46:15 2008: [lsof.pl] Error: lsof.pl /usr/sbin/lsof | grep "/VAULT00/MAXPOOL/MAX001" 2>&1 failed!, rc=1, error=No system error detected. Please check application logs for application errors. (errno=-1). These messages are benign and can be ignored. (TL-2347) The hsm_summary_limit configuration parameter is not used. This parameter should not be used and should be removed from the VTS configuration file. (TL-2272) Unable to unmigrate a pool.
Device names beginning with $ result in ems_hostdevs and ems_virtdevs are not logged. If VTS is used with an HP NonStop host and the device names begin with $, the ems_hostdevs and ems_virtdevs values are blank in the log. This can cause confusion if reviewing the logs. (TL-1562, EAR 4030) AutoCopy and Instant DR Autocopy locks the source cartridge but not the target. The user should be able to configure cartridge locking, with the default being that remote cartridges are locked.
Utilities Must reboot after disabling auditd logging. After you disable auditd logging, the auditd service stops but due to a kernel defect, the output is directed to the console and / var/log/messages. (TL-2465, EAR 4787) WORKAROUND: Reboot after disabling auditd logging (chkconfig auditd off). Message logged to console and /var/log/messages until iLO is configured.
Upgrade failed if EMS was running. Now, the upgrade process properly shuts down EMS before upgrading. (TL-3148) After downgrading from 6.04.02, files that were installed with 6.04.02 remain on the system. The files can be ignored. (TL-3167) Restoring database from previous version corrupts VTS. If a database is backed up using the Download Database page and then restored on a later version of VTS, VTS becomes inoperable.
Troubleshooting This chapter includes information about product features that need improvement or may cause user error. Hardware and configuration Fibre Channel ports do not initiate link status and lasers are off if ports are set to target mode and VTDs are not defined. When a Fibre Channel port is enabled for target mode, the port will not initiate link status until a VTD has been defined on that port and the lasers will be off. The port will appear to be disconnected unless a VTD has been defined.
/opt/hp/hp-ilo/drivers/char/hp_ilo/CpqCiKlx.c:796: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size ... These messages can be ignored. (TL-2079) The “mount /dev/cdrom” command no longer works because VTS handles CD media differently. The new VTS operating system (CentOS 5.2) handles removable media mounting differently than in previous releases.
AutoCopy An error message from ems_telnet.pl indicates that AutoCopy is not configured. For AutoCopy to work as designed, manual procedures that mount a tape must end with unmounting the tape. AutoCopy depends on receiving mount and unmount messages through EMS to work correctly, and when a tape is manually mounted, the EMS subsystem is unaware of this. When the manual operation is completed, the tape must be unmounted manually. (TL-1480) VTSPolicy Incremental backup backs up all cartridges.
