Advanced Options for Tape Connections
If you click the Advanced link at the bottom of the Manage Tape Connections page, you can
access pages that enable you to create, modify, and delete physical, logical, and virtual tapes.
Here is a diagram of the components and their relationships:
The virtual, logical, and physical tapes comprise a VTD. The virtual tape is the definition of
the device that the host will see. It contains information such as the SCSI target or LUN,
which the host uses when connecting to VTS. It also contains device-specific information, such
as the type of device and the device serial number.
The physical tape defines where data transmitted to the virtual device is stored. This is
typically the VTS storage system. Because this is the storage location, the physical tape
definition contains a device type of RAID and a bus identifier that cannot be available on the
system (a high number such as 30).
Lastly, the logical tape definition is the component that links the virtual device definition and
the physical storage location for data transmitted to the virtual device.
This appendix describes how to use those links to create a virtual tape device (VTD).

To add a VTD
1. Add a new physical tape, as follows:
a. Click Factory Setup on the navigation pane.
b. Log in. See the Credentials appendix in the Virtual TapeServer Installation Guide for
a list of default user accounts.
c. Click Manage Tape Connections.
