Introduction Virtual TapeServer (VTS) is a fully integrated virtual tape, hardware and software solution. VTS allows host systems to read from and write to a local or SAN-attached file system. Data is automatically migrated to a tape device based on policies or manually migrated to physical tape for archival storage or disaster recovery, if long-term backup copies are required.
Installation and Configuration This section describes how to access information about installing and configuring the release 6.04.02.02 of Virtual TapeServer (VTS). It also provides compatibility notes. Upgrades and updates Refer to the following for performing product upgrades, updates, and downgrades: If you are upgrading from 6.03.x, you must upgrade to 6.04.01 before upgrading to 6.04.02. Refer to the 6.04.01 Virtual TapeServer Release Notes and 6.04.
Resolved Issues and Enhancements The following changes have been incorporated into the software since the 6.04.02 release. comForte SSH now supported when connecting to host systems for EMS using TACL. comForte SSH can now be configured for each EMS host. (TL-3361) Before configuring EMS, log in to each Nonstop for which comForte SSH will be used for EMS. Log in as the "bill" account from the VTS system and verify that the fingerprint presented is correct.
Known Issues The following known issues, or “errata,” apply to the 6.04.02.02 release. The issue tracking number is provided in parentheses. Refer to this number when making inquiries to Technical Support. There is a table of tracking numbers listed in ascending order, with the summary and document section number, in Issue Index on page 28. Hardware and configuration TD3 and TD4 drives are discovered but become unusable.
Trace messages may be displayed on the console. These messages can be ignored. (TL-3032) General operations Ownership of files is changed if encryption software is run by root. If a program that uses encryption software is run by the root account, ownership of critical files is changed, which will prevent programs from running correctly under normal user authority. The programs that must not be started as root include the following: • ems_master.pl • ems_mounts.pl • ems_send.pl • ems_telnet.
Cannot cancel pending mounts. The web interface indicates “Cancelled 0 pending mounts” but pending mounts are re-queued and given new reqnums every six seconds. The clearmount process attempts to match the reqnum of the pending mount. If they match, the pending mount is cancelled. If they do not match, the pending mount is not cancelled, as indicated by this message in the interface and log: “Error: clearmount found no match in mount queue for reqnum 000000663”.
Error message written to debug log if a physical tape drive is added that is similar to an existing one. If an Ultrium physical tape drive is attached to VTS and one is already in the database, an error message may appear in the debug log indicating that it was unable to add this physical tape to the database. This message can be ignored. (TL2290) Interrupt requests are disabled while VTS is idle. VTS may broadcast to all terminals that it is disabling unused interrupt requests (IRQs).
VTS allows a pool to be restored to a cartridge resulting in data not being stored as expected. If an exported pool is restored to a cartridge, the data will not be restored as separate cartridges but will be stored as regular data on one cartridge. (TL-1041) WORKAROUND: Restore pools to pools, not cartridges. Importing a pool into a different pool can create duplicate cartridges. When a pool is imported, the cartridges are created.
Web interface Change Group option not available after adding new user and group. After adding a new user and group, you must deselect the new user in the Users drop-down list and then select it again to get the “Change Group” option to appear. (TL-3278) Window button on Virtual Media page does not scroll when using Firefox. The Window button on the Virtual Media page should scroll with the page but instead locks in place when the page is scrolled up or down. This seems to only happen with Firefox 3.0.
Message on Manage System Licenses page implies that key was saved when it was not. On the Manage System Licenses page, if you select the Update checkbox, paste a license key in the License Key field, and then deselect the Update checkbox, a message is displayed indicating that the license key is already present. The message is displayed even though the key has not been saved. (TL-3175) WORKAROUND: Navigate away from and back to the page.
missing. It is not until the user selects Add one again and then selects Cancel that the Backup to All button is restored. (TL-3083) WORKAROUND: Click Add One and then click Cancel and the button appears again. Ultrium 1 physical tape drive not displayed in web interface. When attempting to write to an Ultrium 1 physical tape drive, the drive is not displayed in the Physical Tapes section of the VTS web interface. The debug log shows an error executing update inquiry_data.
Clicking the browser Back button after creating a system restore image causes download to start again. After clicking Supervisor Functions -> Create VTS System Restore Image, a file download dialog box is displayed. After the file is downloaded or canceled, you are presented with a web page indicating what has happened, but no return link is displayed. Clicking the browser back button causes VTS to begin creating the system restore image again.
The selected menu item does not correspond to the displayed page when the browser Back or Forward buttons are used to navigate the web interface. If you use the Back or Forward button provided by the browser to navigate to pages on the web interface, the previously viewed menu item is displayed on the main page but the highlighted menu item does not go back or forward to the corresponding menu item. (TL570) Cannot cancel a manual mount request using the Cancel button.
Creating cartridges in an encrypted pool when SecureVTS is not running generated confusing message. If SecureVTS is not running and you attempt to create cartridges in an encrypted pool, messages similar to the following are displayed. (TL3048) Created 0 of 10 in P17 of size 2T successfully: Cartridge BBB000 in P17 failed encryption rc=254 Restoring corrupt key database succeeds when it should not.
validated...”, though the key as submitted was not valid. Afterward, the (invalid) key is not displayed. (TL-2320) WORKAROUND: Submit all license keys with surrounding characters removed. If a quoted license key was submitted, on the Virtual TapeServer Licensing page, click the Update checkbox, type or paste the correct license key, and then click SUBMIT. Doing this will discard the invalid license key and replace it with the correct one.
Attempting to mount a cartridge that cannot be decrypted causes repeated mount requests. If a NonStop server requests the mount of an encrypted cartridge that VTS cannot decrypt, VTS continually attempts to mount the cartridge every six seconds. (TL-1136) Removing a key generator may cause a delay before cartridges can be encrypted again. After removing a key generator, if there are any key generators left, it may take up to 5 minutes before cartridges can be encrypted again.
A corrupt key database backup can be propagated to all key database backup hosts. If a key database backup is corrupted, the corrupt backup can be propagated to all key database backup hosts. (TL-941) WORKAROUND: Archive key database backups on a regular basis. Store archives outside of the VTS environment to ensure that you can return to a working copy of the key database in the unlikely event that the copy in use becomes corrupted. The ks_backup.log file may contain DOS line terminations.
Cartridge having less than minimum size is listed as erasable in Scan/Cleanup after migration. If a cartridge is below the size specified by the cleanup_minimum_size_ MB parameter, the cartridge is scheduled to be erased by Scan/Cleanup after migration. This is incorrect behavior; it should not be scheduled for erasure. (TL-444) Migration Cartridge not ejected after migration by Legato. After migration is completed, the cartridge should be ejected and put back in the tape slot.
The DSA key fingerprint is used to identify that the remote host is the expected remote host, preventing a “man in the middle” attack. (TL-3400) WORKAROUND: For EMS to be able to connect to a remote host successfully, a manual connection must first be made so that the fingerprint can be verified and accepted. Once this has been done, subsequent connections can be made without manual intervention. Cannot edit or delete host pair after adding and deleting multiple host pairs.
AutoCopy and Instant DR Autocopy locks the source cartridge but not the target. The user should be able to configure cartridge locking, with the default being that remote cartridges are locked. (TL2529) AutoCopy may create pools on a VTS server that could not otherwise be created. AutoCopy may be used to create pools on a VTS server that could not otherwise be created, such as having both a 'TEST' and a 'test' pool.
cma.log fills without bounds causing the / partition to fill to 100%. 50 messages similar to the following are written to /var/spool/compaq/cma.log every couple of seconds. (TL-3465) netsnmp_assert 1 == _access_interface_init failed if-mib/data_access/ interface.c:659 netsnmp_access_interface_entry_overrides_get() netsnmp_assert 1 == _access_interface_init failed if-mib/data_access/ interface.
f. Issue the following commands to find the boot device: chroot /mnt/sysimage grep boot= /boot/grub/grub.conf Note the device returned by the grep command (/dev/cciss/c0d0, /dev/sda/, and so on). g. Install GRUB on the device. /dev/cciss/c0d0 is used in this example: grub-install /dev/cciss/c0d0 h. Exit the chroot environment and reboot by issuing these commands: exit reboot Upgrade process does not ensure all processes are shut down. The upgrade may not shut down all processes before starting.
Documentation Remote syslog configuration not documented. (TL-3219) WORKAROUND: To configure remote syslog, complete these steps: a. On the target system as root, edit /etc/syslog.conf. b. Add the following line: *.* @remote.log.host.domain.com where remote.log.host.domain.com is the host name or IP address of the remote host that will log messages for the target host. Note that *.* indicates that all log messages are to be sent to the remote host and a more restrictive selection could be made.
Troubleshooting This chapter includes information about product features that need improvement or may cause user error. Hardware and configuration DNS must work properly in order for VTS to function. If the domain name does not resolve correctly, the system will hang during shutdown or reboot. Verify the contents of /etc/resolv.conf. (TL-3450) Fibre Channel ports do not initiate link status and lasers are off if ports are set to target mode and VTDs are not defined.
SCSI EJECT command on an empty VTD hangs the calling client's mt command. When sending a SCSI EJECT command (mt -f /dev/st? eject) to an empty VTD, the command will take up to a minute to timeout prior to returning. In releases before 6.04, this command would return immediately. (TL-2317) Error message displayed on console after VTS is booted for the first time.
A - is displayed for a cartridge limit for old cartridges. Cartridges that existed before VTS was upgraded will display a - for the limit, but all new cartridges will display 2TB if not given a limit. When the old cartridge is loaded writable, the size limit will be updated to be writable, and the size limit will be updated to 2TB. (TL-2173) File size of a mounted tape being written may not be updated.
Utilities The Tcl executable is installed in a different location. The Tcl executable is now located at /usr/bin/tclsh; previously, it was located in /usr/bin/tcl. (TL-1741) /usr/local/tape/bin executables cannot be run as root. The programs in /usr/local/ tape/bin must not be run as root unless otherwise specified. If this is done inadvertently, check the ownership of the files in /home/bill/.gnupg and ensure that they are owned by the 'bill' account and have group ownership of 'bill' as well.
