Virtual TapeServer 6.04.03 Operations and Administration Guide
11
Overview of Tasks
Initial configuration of the Virtual TapeServer (VTS) should be complete. To complete
configuration, perform these tasks, which are described in this guide.
To configure VTS
1. Back up the database and configuration files as described in Backing Up the VTS Server
on page 13.
2. If necessary, update the VTS software as described in Upgrading, updating, and
downgrading VTS on page 119.
3. Verify the virtual tape drives (VTDs) and modify them as necessary, such as to rename
VTDs according to your chosen naming convention. See
Modifying Virtual Tape Drives on
page 17 for more information.
4. Verify or reconfigure access control settings as described in Configuring Access Control on
page 21.
5. Configure the user interface as described in Configuring Web Interface Preferences on
page 47.
6. Create pools and tapes as described in Managing Pools and Virtual Tapes on page 51.
7. Confirm access to the VTDs from the host server; tape drives should be defined and
started on the host server. See the Virtual TapeServer Installation Guide for more
information.
8. Write labels to the virtual tapes from the host server as described in Labeling virtual
tapes on the host server on page 71.
9. Verify EMS settings by running a labeled backup on each VTD.
10. If you want to use the HP System Health Application and Insight Management Agents to
monitor VTS, you must configure them. See
HP health monitoring utilities on page 126
for more information.
11. Again, back up the database and configuration files as described in Backing Up the VTS
Server on page 13.
Then, perform the following day-to-day tasks to maintain VTS.
To maintain VTS
• View and save log files. See Log files on page 132 for more information.
• Start and stop processes, including the main TapeServer process, from the Supervisory
Functions page.
• Power on and off the VTS system as described in Powering up and down on page 117.
