Introduction Virtual TapeServer (VTS) is a fully integrated virtual tape, hardware and software solution. VTS allows host systems to read from and write to a local or SAN-attached file system. Data is automatically migrated to a tape device based on policies or manually migrated to physical tape for archival storage or disaster recovery, if long-term backup copies are required.
Installation and Configuration This section describes how to access information about installing and configuring the release 6.04.03.01 of VTS. It also provides compatibility notes. Upgrades If you are upgrading from 6.03.x, you must upgrade to 6.04.01 before upgrading to 6.04.03. Refer to the 6.04.01 Virtual TapeServer Release Notes and Operations and Administration Guide for information about upgrading to 6.04.01. Before installing the 6.04.03.01 interim release, you must first upgrade to 6.04.03.
Complete these steps to correct the error: a. Revert the file or files to the version provided by the IR. Three versions of each file are provided in the IR. For example: /var/www/html/src/sysrestore.php /var/www/html/src/sysrestore.php.pre_6.04.03.01 /var/www/html/src/sysrestore.php.new_6.04.03.01 The sysrestore.php.pre_6.04.03.01 and sysrestore.php.new_6.04.03.01 files were created during installation of the IR. The .new_6.04.03.01 file is the version of the file that is currently installed. The .pre_6.
Compatibility This section describes interoperability of VTS with host servers, backup management applications, and browsers. For a complete list of hardware and application compatibility, see the HP Virtual TapeServer Compatibility Matrix. Host server support The following host servers are supported: NonStop S-series NS-series Blade systems However, the following host servers were tested for use with VTS. HP Integrity NonStop NS1000 Server, H06.10.
Resolved Issues and Enhancements The following changes have been incorporated into the software since the 6.04.03 release. Hardware and configuration Exports to SCSI physical drives may have failed. When simultaneously running backups to a VTD and writing to external SCSI storage device, various errors could occur that caused the loss of use of the SCSI storage device. Exports may have failed with an RC9 return code.
Web interface This section has been subdivided to better classify the issues. General Could not edit EMS hosts or virtual devices. If more than one EMS host or virtual device was created, you could not edit any of them other than the first in the lists. This has been fixed. (TL-3714) Logwatch Parent Directory link displayed nested pages. Selecting from the Supervisor Functions -> Examine Logwatch Output -> Parent Directory link caused the page to be displayed within the same page.
EMS Split EMS lines may not have matched, causing missed mounts. Backups ran slowly and mounts were missed if the mount line was split into two lines that should be matched by MATCH 61 (first line) and MATCH 62 (second line); the first line was not matched. This caused the MATCH 62 to skip the mount because the variables that should be set by the first line were not set. This has been fixed. (TL-4039, EAR 5671, EAR 5929) Tapes were mounted as “tape not write enabled”.
Ambiguous redirect error displayed if you restored an image that had been restored. If you attempted to restore a system image from the version of VTS that has already been restored, an “ambiguous redirect” error message was displayed though the restore succeeds. This has been fixed.
Known Issues The following known issues, or “errata,” apply to the 6.04.03.01 release. The issue tracking number is provided in parentheses. Refer to this number when making inquiries to Technical Support. There is a table of tracking numbers listed in ascending order, with the summary and document section number, in Issue Index on page 33. Hardware and configuration SCSI speed for an AS/400 initiator to a VTD is less than 160MB/sec.
ACPI Exception messages are displayed and logged during boot. At boot time, messages similar to the following may be displayed on the system console and in /var/log/ dmesg. These messages are benign and may be ignored. (TL-2280) ACPI Exception (acpi_processor-0681): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [20060707] ACPI: Getting cpuindex for acpiid 0x2 Trace messages may be displayed on the console. These messages can be ignored.
• ems_telnet.pl • hsmdelete.pl • hsmget.pl • hsmput.pl • vtsisc_cancel.pl • vtsisc_mount.pl • vtsisc_unmount.pl • vts_scratch_erase.pl The most common symptom of this problem is that VTS will not be able to log into a host server. Log messages may make it appear as if a password has not been set, though it has been set since encrypted passwords cannot be decrypted.
Error message written to debug log if a physical tape drive is added that is similar to an existing one. If an Ultrium physical tape drive is attached to VTS and one is already in the database, an error message may appear in the debug log indicating that it was unable to add this physical tape to the database. This message can be ignored. (TL2290) Interrupt requests are disabled while the server is idle. VTS may broadcast to all terminals that it is disabling unused interrupt requests (IRQs).
Request to mount cartridge fails if a currently mounted cartridge is unmounted by another process while processing the mount request. If a request is issued to mount a cartridge in a virtual tape drive where another cartridge is mounted, the request is ignored if the mounted cartridge is unmounted while VTS is processing the mount request. (TL-368) WORKAROUND: Attempt to mount the cartridge again. To disable ISC, two parameters must be set.
Tape can be mounted in deleted VTD and the tape remains locked. If you delete a VTD, VTS still allows you to mount a virtual tape in the deleted VTD. No data is lost but the tape is locked. This occurs if multiple windows are used and actions are performed in one window and affect the actions taken in the other. (TL-3156) WORKAROUND: Remove the lock using the Mounts and Locks page. Date and time shown for locked cartridges is incorrect.
Cannot edit VTD named “0”. If you create a VTD named “0”, you cannot edit the VTD, though you can delete it. The following error message is displayed. (TL-3721) The name 0 is already in use by virtual 0 51314695 RMDR link is available after downgrade to 6.04.02 or 6.04.01. The RMDR link is present on the System Status page after a downgrade, which is not supported in this version of VTS. (TL-3878) VTD names and serial numbers should not be case-sensitive.
Performance of Virtual Media page in GFS cluster degrades as number of servers grows. The Virtual Media page in a GFS cluster loads slowly and performance degrades as the cluster size grows. The time to load the page can take up to 20 minutes or longer in such cases, with only one node loading the page. (TL-3041, EAR 4912) Backup of database fails if scheduling a backup.
Clicking the browser Back button after creating a system restore image causes download to start again. After clicking Supervisor Functions -> Create System Restore Image, a file download dialog box is displayed. After the file is downloaded or canceled, you are presented with a web page indicating what has happened, but no return link is displayed. Clicking the browser back button causes VTS to begin creating the system restore image again.
Access Control Certain Access Control settings cause each update cycle to prompt for a password. If Access Control for operations is set to one of the following, the web interface prompts for a password three times every time a page refreshes: 'BASIC access', 'Vault Access', 'Access to All Vaults', 'View System Status', 'Change Refresh Rate', 'Stop and Start Tapeserver'. The dialog can be cancelled (and works correctly), but it will prompt again on the next update cycle.
Pool is shown as encrypted though encryption failed. If no key generator is configured and you set a pool to be encrypted, the operation will fail but the Pool Maintenance and Virtual Media pages indicate that the pool is encrypted. (TL-3756) No indication that configuration is incomplete and encryption/decryption will fail. If no remote key generator backup host is defined and working, encryption or decryption may fail with no indication other than rc=254 or rc=-2 in a log.
Errors are logged to encry_key.log during exports and uploads. During exports and uploads, messages similar to the following are logged to encry_key.log: Fri Mar 6 08:51:59 2009 [6632]: Error: missing device specification! These log messages can be ignored. (TL-2772) Decrypting or encrypting a cartridge not owned by bill causes the system to hang. If a user attempts to encrypt or decrypt a cartridge that is not owned by bill, the system makes a copy of the file into ./temp.
Empty labeled encrypted cartridges may show a compression ratio. An encrypted cartridge that is labeled and then decrypted will show 0 size and a compression ratio. Reencrypting that cartridge will continue to show a compression ratio. This does not reflect the compression ratio that a cartridge will display once data is written to that cartridge and can safely be ignored. (TL-1155) Empty, unlabeled encrypted cartridges may show a compression ratio.
Error message erroneously logged if the local copy of the key server backup utility changes volumes and is placed in another vault. If the local copy of the key server backup utility changes volumes and is placed in another vault, it may trigger a critical error in the event log indicating a duplicate pool. This critical log entry can be ignored. (TL-984) Non-SecureVTS servers do not indicate when cartridges are encrypted.
Scan/Cleanup Scan/Cleanup cannot erase cartridges in VTLs. When running Scan/Cleanup, locked cartridges in a VTL will not be erased after migration even though they meet the criteria to be erased. (TL-4326) WORKAROUND: Disable the VTL. Retention time is not displayed correctly on Scan/Cleanup page. Retention is shown in weeks until retention time exceeds a year, then it is shown in years. Time is stored as a number of seconds but incorrectly converted for display.
Default vts.conf file does not include migrate_all parameter. This parameter can be set to allow all cartridges, including empty ones, to be migrated. This parameter is not present in the default configuration file. (TL-3950) Migrate all does not export all cartridges. If the migrate_all parameter is set, cartridges are migrated but not exported. (TL-3954) Cartridge not ejected after migration by Legato. After migration is completed, the cartridge should be ejected and put back in the tape slot.
IPv6 localhost address listed in log messages. Here is an example of the log message: Fri Sep 05 17:47:58 2008 DEV4: 08-09-05 18:00:21 \DEV4.0,193 TANDEM.EMS.H01 000512 VTS.6.04.01 Critical 820205 VT5900G ::1 vtsdev21 bill ems reject C18003 for DEV4 virtual cartridge mi The host address is ::1 when it should be localhost or 127.0.0.1. (TL-2086) Mounts fails when ems_virtdevs and ems_hostdevs entries are delimited by commas. In vts.
AutoCopy may create pools on a server that could not otherwise be created. AutoCopy may be used to create pools on a VTS server that could not otherwise be created, such as having both a 'TEST' and a 'test' pool. (TL-868) WORKAROUND: When using AutoCopy, you may need to review of all AutoCopy pools to ensure that there are no duplicate pool names and correct for any such occurrences. Labeling a virtual tape in an Autocopy pool logs error messages in ems.log.
Cannot restart the httpd process because another process is using its port. After stopping the httpd process, it cannot be restarted sometimes because another process is listening on its port (80). (TL-4232) WORKAROUND: Reboot or manually stop processes until port 80 is free. RSH must be disabled if not running Instant DR, to pass security vulnerability reports. RSH is enabled by default. (TL-3927) WORKAROUND: To disable RSH, log in to the server as root, edit /etc/xinetd.
“URL not found” message displayed when creating a system restore image with insufficient disk space. If there is not enough space to create a system restore image, the user should be notified that there is not enough space rather than a “URL not found” message. (TL-4176) System restore image is incomplete if there is insufficient disk space before image.
Troubleshooting This chapter includes information about product features that need improvement or may cause user error. Hardware and configuration Fibre Channel ports do not initiate link status and lasers are off if ports are set to target mode and VTDs are not defined. When a Fibre Channel port is enabled for target mode, the port will not initiate link status until a VTD has been defined on that port and the lasers will be off. The port will appear to be disconnected unless a VTD has been defined.
Nov 15 failed Nov 15 (0x69) 13:46:52 vts15 kernel: isp0: Mailbox Command 'GET FW STATE' (TIMEOUT) 13:46:52 vts15 kernel: isp0: Interrupting Mailbox Command Timeout (elapsed time 100 jiffies) When encrypting or decrypting a cartridge and Tapeserver stops, temporary directory and file are not deleted. Do not stop Tapeserver or restart VTS unless the system is quiesced. (TL-3071) SCSI EJECT command on an empty VTD hangs the calling client's mt command.
Web interface Logging in to web interface on localhost does not redirect to secure page. When accessing the web interface from the localhost, HTTPS is not needed because data is not transmitted. (TL-3643) Browser may display old data or errors if not refreshed. If an unexpected error occurs or data appears to be old, refresh the browser. Old data is cached and may need to be cleared. (TL-1662) Apache servers are prone to cross-site scripting weakness. VTS uses version 2.2.
EMS The default interval for EMS keep-alive messages has been increased to 300 seconds. If you upgraded VTS to 6.04.02, verify the keep-alive interval to ensure that a reasonable value is being used in the EMS configuration in vts.conf. Or, disable the keepalive messages if not needed. (TL-3174) Utilities and services HP monitoring services web interface may become unresponsive. (TL-3063) WORKAROUND: snmpd may need to be restarted by running “service snmpd restart” as root.
