Introduction Virtual TapeServer (VTS) is a fully integrated virtual tape, hardware and software solution. VTS allows host systems to read from and write to a local or SAN-attached file system. Data is automatically migrated to a tape device based on policies or manually migrated to physical tape for archival storage or disaster recovery, if long-term backup copies are required.
Installation and Configuration This section describes how to access information about installing and configuring the release 6.04.03.02 of VTS. It also provides compatibility notes. Upgrades If you are upgrading from 6.03.x, you must upgrade to 6.04.01 before upgrading to 6.04.03. Refer to the 6.04.01 Virtual TapeServer Release Notes and Operations and Administration Guide for information about upgrading to 6.04.01. Before installing the 6.04.03.02 interim release (IR), you must first upgrade to 6.04.03.
Complete these steps to correct the error: a. Revert the file or files to the version provided by the IR. Three versions of each file are provided in the IR. For example: /var/www/html/src/sysrestore.php /var/www/html/src/sysrestore.php.pre_version /var/www/html/src/sysrestore.php.new_version The sysrestore.php.pre_version and sysrestore.php.new_version files were created during installation of the IR. The .new_version file is the version of the file that is currently installed. The .
Configuration Complete configuration information is documented in the Virtual TapeServer Operations and Administrative Guide. Compatibility This section describes interoperability of VTS with host servers, backup management applications, and browsers. For a complete list of hardware and application compatibility, see the HP Virtual TapeServer Compatibility Matrix. Host server support Note When connecting host servers over Fibre Channel to the VTS server, use one port per host server, if possible.
For a list of backup management applications supported on the host server, see Host server support on page 4. Browser support The following browsers are supported for use viewing the VTS web interface: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.
Resolved Issues and Enhancements The following changes have been incorporated into the software since the 6.04.03 release. Hardware and configuration HBAs used a default SCSI ID of 7. In most cases, SCSI ID 7 may conflict with the SCSI ID used by host systems, which is also 7. Now, VTS uses default ID 6. (TL-4117) Exports to SCSI physical drives may have failed.
vtsa user could not issue mount command. From the command line, the vtsa user could not issue the /bin/mount command. This has been fixed. (TL-3981) SCSI commands timed out for MODE_SELECT, TUR, and WRITE_FILEMARKS. VTS flushed its cache causing delayed responses to the SCSI commands sent by the host server. The amount of memory used for disk write caching has now been tuned and this problem no longer occurs. (TL-4207, EAR 6223) Physical devices now automatically created when connected.
Migration NetBackup migrate jobs were marked with “Success message not found” errors. The success message was written to the NetBackup log after the log was captured by the hsmput.pl script. Now, a delay occurs before capturing the log file. (TL-4096, EAR 6145) AutoCopy and Instant DR Retry message erroneously given when AutoCopy started. An erroneous error was given when AutoCopy was started: 2009-11-25 02:10:15|Error|625004|VT5900J|SYDB|VTSB|bill|autocopy.
RPM now installed to enable fence_ilo to run. The perl-Net-SSLeay-1.301.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm file has now been installed, enabling the user to run fence_ilo. (TL4045) XMLRPC and Ruby logs were not rotated. The XMLRPC and Ruby production log files were not rotated according to the logrotate settings. This has been fixed. (TL-3997) Installation, upgrades, updates, downgrade, and restore After a system restore, duplicate VTDs were created on Manage Connections page. This has been fixed.
Known Issues The following known issues, or “errata,” apply to the 6.04.03.02 release. The issue tracking number is provided in parentheses. Refer to this number when making inquiries to Technical Support. There is a table of tracking numbers listed in ascending order, with the summary and document section number, in Issue Index on page 34. Hardware and configuration SCSI speed is 3.3MB/s after TapeServer is restarted. If TapeServer is stopped and started, the SCSI speed is negotiated to 3.300MB/s.
General operations Writing to VTD fails if you attempt to create a VTD on same bus. If data is being written to a VTD and you attempt to create a VTD on the same bus, writing fails with this error: Cannot write: Input/output error (TL-4464) Call Trace messages displayed on console after importing cartridges. After successfully importing cartridges, messages similar to the following may be displayed on the console.
To determine if the problem is present, execute the following as root or bill and verify that one or more files is owned by root: ls -l /home/bill/.gnupg WORKAROUND: To correct the problem, execute the following command as root: chown bill.bill /home/bill/.gnupg/* Segfaults occur during shutdown and reboot. A performance monitoring agent may segfault during shutdown. This causes no system impact. (TL-3320) Corrupt virtual tape causes server to become unresponsive.
Encryption allowed on cartridge exceeds cartridge limit. Encryption will cause the size of the data to be larger than when it is unencrypted. If a cartridge contains the maximum amount of data, encrypting the cartridge will cause the cartridge limit to be exceeded. However, no error is given to indicate this situation. The cartridge can be exported but if it is imported to a cartridge of the original cartridge limit size, the import will fail.
No activity or a “hung” command occurs when an import request is issued to a physical drive that is unavailable. If a physical drive is unavailable (powered off, cable disconnected, and so on), VTS does not properly handle the error and a timeout does not occur, causing VTS to hang and require a reboot. (TL-61) Web interface This section has been subdivided to better classify the issues. General Virtual Media page cannot be accessed when TapeServer is stopped.
Using the Import/Export interface results in an error in encr_key.log. Invoking an import or native export results in the “Error: missing device specification!” error in encr_key.log. This appears when a pool, a single encrypted tape, or single non-encrypted tape is selected. The message is benign and can safely be ignored. (TL-1035) Cached credentials used to log in after user logs out. When you log out, the log in page is displayed.
List of cartridges is incorrect if duplicates exist on the system. After an import, the list of cartridges displayed on the user interface may not match the list of cartridges on the file system. This occurs if there are duplicate pools or cartridges. (TL-3170) Message on Manage System Licenses page implies that key was saved when it was not.
No message is displayed when system restore image is created. If you create a system restore image, the web interface should display a message before creating the image. Currently, the web interface does not indicate that it is creating the image and the page may be blank for several minutes. (TL-3105) Ultrium 1 physical tape drive not displayed in web interface.
Long pool names cause cartridge creation to fail but report success. If you try to create cartridges in a pool with a path name of 255 characters or greater, the cartridge creation reports success but it fails. (TL-1869) WORKAROUND: Create pools with path names less than 255 characters. Firefox shows negative values on the System Status page.
Start Tapeserver'. The dialog can be cancelled (and works correctly), but it will prompt again on the next update cycle. (TL-1920) WORKAROUND: Lengthen the browser’s refresh cycle to minimize the impact of this issue. No log out button is available if basic access rights are enabled for a new user. No log out button is provided on the web interface. (TL-4235) WORKAROUND: Close the browser and re-open it to get a login prompt. If necessary, clear the browser cache to get a new login prompt.
No indication that configuration is incomplete and encryption/decryption will fail. If no remote key generator backup host is defined and working, encryption or decryption may fail with no indication other than rc=254 or rc=-2 in a log. The keys are not cached until a remote host is defined. Encryption and decryption is not possible until a remote backup host is defined. (TL-3686) SecureVTS with remote key generator does not encrypt cartridges.
Decrypting or encrypting a cartridge not owned by bill causes the system to hang. If a user attempts to encrypt or decrypt a cartridge that is not owned by bill, the system makes a copy of the file into ./temp.vts but hangs when attempting to write the cartridge back to the original file. The web interface simply attempts to refresh, allowing no other connections in. To check cartridge ownership, run ls -al from the VTS server command line for the /VAULT##/POOLNAME/.
file sizes of the two cartridges are slightly different. This does not reflect the compression ratio that a cartridge will display once data is written to that cartridge and can safely be ignored. (TL-1088) Encrypting a cartridge after it is created can take much longer than encrypting a cartridge during creation. After-the-fact encryption can take up to eight times longer than on-the-fly encryption. (TL-1150) Attempting to mount a cartridge that cannot be decrypted causes repeated mount requests.
Unmounted vaults may cause a key database restore to fail. If a vault is not mounted, it may cause a key database restore to fail. (TL-951) WORKAROUND: Remove the backup host and force a backup with the Backup to All button. Then, restore using the Restore From Disaster Recovery button. After the restore is successful, re-add the backup host. A corrupt key database backup can be propagated to all key database backup hosts.
Scan/Cleanup is not enabled though the web interface indicates that it is. scanat.log includes the “Scan/cleanup configuration error - auto erase not enabled.” message, but the web interface shows that auto erase is enabled, and Scan/Cleanup did not run. (TL-3702) WORKAROUND: If necessary, enable and configure Scan/Cleanup as described in the Installation Guide. Cartridges are not erased when expected if cleanup_autoerase is configured.
Error, miscellaneous messages logged after successful NetBackup migration. Message similar to the following are logged in the debug log after a successful migration with NetBackup 6.5: Fri Nov 7 14:45:27 2008: [slave_signal_thread 15713] SIGCHLD received while no active child, ignoring it. Fri Nov 7 14:45:32 2008: [cli_tape 0x05000107] ERROR UNKNOWN tape command 0x44 for Id 0 Fri Nov 07 14:46:15 2008: [lsof.pl] Error: lsof.
Mounts fails when ems_virtdevs and ems_hostdevs entries are delimited by commas. In vts.conf, the entries for the ems_virtdevs_ and ems_hostdevs_ must be separated by a space. Using a comma delimiter does not work. (TL-2292) If a mount command is sent to a non-existent virtual tape drive, VTS reports that the tape is missing, not the drive.
Labeling a virtual tape in an Autocopy pool logs error messages in ems.log. Messages similar to the following are logged when a tape in an Autocopy pool is labeled. Sat May 26 07:28:36 2007 TANDEM.TAPE.G06 000659 : DRIVE Sat May 26 07:28:36 2007 doAutoCopy: 2. Sat May 26 07:28:36 2007 autocopy_Host for TOOL14 DEV4: 07-05-26 13:20:09 \DEV4. STATUS 1512 - TOOL14 TAPE DISMOUNTED FROM DEV4: DISMOUNT Cartridge: TOOL14, DEV4: ems_telnet.AUTOCOPY Error is not configured.
RSH must be disabled if not running Instant DR, to pass security vulnerability reports. RSH is enabled by default. (TL-3927) WORKAROUND: To disable RSH, log in to the server as root, edit /etc/xinetd.d/rsh to change the line that reads “disable = no” to “disable = yes”. Then, run the “service xinetd reload” command. hp-ilo module cannot rebuild itself after an upgrade then downgrade. When performing an upgrade from 6.04.02, kernel headers are not backed up. Upgrading to 6.04.
System restore image is incomplete if there is insufficient disk space before image. When attempting to create a system restore image on a system that does not have enough disk space, no warning is displayed indicating that there is not enough room. Instead, files are omitted from the TAR file. (TL-4021) System restore does not handle database restore failure well. If a problem occurs while restoring the database during a system restore, the server may be left with a partial or no database.
Troubleshooting This chapter includes information about product features that need improvement or may cause user error. Hardware and configuration Fibre Channel ports do not initiate link status and lasers are off if ports are set to target mode and VTDs are not defined. When a Fibre Channel port is enabled for target mode, the port will not initiate link status until a VTD has been defined on that port and the lasers will be off. The port will appear to be disconnected unless a VTD has been defined.
Nov 15 failed Nov 15 (0x69) 13:46:52 vts15 kernel: isp0: Mailbox Command 'GET FW STATE' (TIMEOUT) 13:46:52 vts15 kernel: isp0: Interrupting Mailbox Command Timeout (elapsed time 100 jiffies) When encrypting or decrypting a cartridge and Tapeserver stops, temporary directory and file are not deleted. Do not stop Tapeserver or restart VTS unless the system is quiesced. (TL-3071) SCSI EJECT command on an empty VTD hangs the calling client's mt command.
Web interface Logging in to web interface on localhost does not redirect to secure page. When accessing the web interface from the localhost, HTTPS is not needed because data is not transmitted. (TL-3643) Browser may display old data or errors if not refreshed. If an unexpected error occurs or data appears to be old, refresh the browser. Old data is cached and may need to be cleared. (TL-1662) Apache servers are prone to cross-site scripting weakness. VTS uses version 2.2.
EMS The default interval for EMS keep-alive messages has been increased to 300 seconds. If you upgraded VTS to 6.04.02, verify the keep-alive interval to ensure that a reasonable value is being used in the EMS configuration in vts.conf. Or, disable the keepalive messages if not needed. (TL-3174) Utilities and services HP monitoring services web interface may become unresponsive. (TL-3063) WORKAROUND: snmpd may need to be restarted by running “service snmpd restart” as root.
