Virtual TapeServer 6.04.04 for NonStop Servers Operations and Administration Guide

Log files
VTS provides many log files for troubleshooting issues with various functions of the system.
For example, the EMS log contains all messages (dependant on filters) received from the
NonStop server and the responses sent from VTS. VTS adds text that describes successful or
unsuccessful mounts, VTSPolicy commands that were interpreted, and so on. This file enables
you to diagnose the EMS configuration to and from the NonStop.
The following is a description of each type of log file that is available from the VTS web
interface:
Debug logs
Contain detailed VTS software information and error messages. The information in
these logs is more detailed than those shown in the event logs.
Note
Set the severity level for debug logs by selecting Supervisor
Functions→Set Debug Level.
EMS Message logs
Provide information related to EMS messages sent to and from the Nonstop server. If
there are communication issues between the VTS and Nonstop servers, check the
messages in these logs.
IDR logs
Contain information and errors relating to the Instant DR feature.
HSM “Get” logs
Provide information and errors relating to restoring cartridges from backup
management applications.
HSM “Put” logs
Provide information and errors relating to migrating cartridges to a backup
management application.
System logs
Provide information about the VTS operating system, such as the state of devices and
software services.
Event logs
Contain information regarding VTS software events, such as mounting or
dismounting tapes.
Each log file is rotated once the log file reaches a size greater than 10KB. When the size limit
is reached, the old log is renamed to a new name containing the rotation number (such as
debug.log.1) and a new (blank) log begins with the default name. All rotated log files are
compressed (using gzip) after the second rotation except for the first log file (most recent). If
the file is compressed, .gz is appended to the log file name. This file is renewed each day at 4
a.m. Up to 30 files are saved for each type of log.
