Creating virtual tapes
Requires the Virtual Tape Cartridge Maintenance, Vault Access, and Access to all Vaults
access rights
To create one or more virtual tapes within a pool
1. Click Virtual Media on the navigation pane.
2. Select cartridge maintenance from the window drop-down list at the top of the Virtual
Media - Operation page. The Virtual Media - Cartridge Maintenance page is displayed.
3. Specify the parameters of the tape as described in the online help. To view the help, click
the Help Set link on the About page.
When you return to the primary operation screen, + is displayed next to the pool indicating
that it now contains a virtual tape.
Mounting a virtual tape in a VTD
You can manually mount a virtual tape in a standalone VTD. (You can automate mounting
using the Event Management System; see
Configuring EMS Communication on page 23.)
Then, to backup the mounted virtual tape, use the backup software you normally use to
perform a backup to a device. When you mount a virtual tape, its modification date is not
updated; the ctime (inode change time) is updated.
Note If SecureVTS is enabled and the virtual tape is encrypted, the data on the tape is
decrypted when it is read. The data on the virtual tape remains encrypted. See Using
SecureVTS on page 53 for more information about this feature.
