Virtual TapeServer 6.04.04 for NonStop Servers Release Notes

Introduction | 1
Introduction
Virtual TapeServer (VTS) is a fully integrated virtual tape, hardware and software solution.
VTS allows host systems to read from and write to a local or SAN-attached file system. Data
is automatically migrated to a tape device based on policies or manually migrated to physical
tape for archival storage or disaster recovery, if long-term backup copies are required. The
integrated support for backup management application software provides a mechanism for
writing to physical tape drives and libraries. (If GFS is enabled in your environment, multiple
VTS servers can access a shared set of pools and virtual tapes stored on the same storage
array.)

Overview of features
Release 6.04.04 introduces the following new features and support to VTS:
Windows Server 2008 host support running the backup applications listed on page 4.
Simplified network configuration. See the Quick Start Guide for more information on the
feature changes listed below:
A new tool called netconfig has been added to provide an easy interface to configure
system IP address, hostname, and DNS information for new systems.
VTS now ships with eth0 configured with DHCP and eth1 configured with a static IP
address of 1.1.1.1.
Initial configuration can be made over serial port, Ethernet crossover, or using the
console.
HP LTO-3 virtual tape emulation is now available.
SCSI and Fibre Channel buses are now aliased to consistent port numbers based on their
PCI slot location. The Manage System Limits page has been replaced with a user-friendly
section on the Manage Connections page, which lists each of the ports and clearly shows if
they are in virtual or physical mode. In addition, a graphic of the back of the system is
provided to identify where connections should be made. See the online help on the
Manage Connections page for more information.
