Introduction Virtual TapeServer (VTS) is a fully integrated virtual tape, hardware and software solution. VTS offers complete disaster recovery capabilities. As a primary repository for data center backups, VTS can be used as secondary tiered storage for replicated data to meet disaster recovery requirements. Overview of features Release 8.0 introduces the following new features and support to VTS: • Virtual tape library (VTL) support — VTLs can now be created and used for backups.
• Role swap and Remote Export job — Role swapping is now available and provided through the use of Remote Export jobs. See the documentation for full details. • Export and Import can now be performed on standalone drives — The drives can be configured on the System Settings page. The export/import operations are carried out as jobs and are allowed to be canceled allowing full control to the user. See the online help for details.

Upgrade and Downgrade This section provides procedures for upgrading and downgrading the VTS appliance(s) in your environment. It also provides a list of known issues related to upgrade and downgrade. Upgrading to 8.0 You can upgrade to 8.0 from version 6.04.03, 6.04.04, and 6.04.05. During the upgrade, a backup of /usr/local/tape/ is created and upgrade and new operating system RPMs are installed. After the upgrade completes, you can view the upgrade logs from the Manage Logs page of the web interface.
9. Copy the 8.0 ZIP file to an attached vault on the VTS server. For example, if you are upgrading to 8.0, copy the T0868V02^AAP.zip file to the server. Then, unzip the file. Here are command examples: mkdir /VAULT00/8.0upgrade cd /VAULT00/8.0upgrade unzip T0868V02^AAP.zip 10. Stop all VTS services by clicking the appropriate links on the Supervisory Functions page. 11. Click Supervisor Functions on the navigation pane and then click Apply Revision Update. 12. Select From File on the following page: 13.
c.
mount –o loop /VAULT00/8.0upgrade/HPSIM.iso /media/cdrom d. Upgrade HP SIM by entering the following command: /media/cdrom/installHPTools.bash Note e. This script instructs you to reboot after it is finished. Do not reboot now; you will reboot the system in step h below. Unmount and eject the DVD: umount /media/cdrom eject f. Log in to the VTS web interface and click Configuration→Virtual Devices on the navigation pane. g. Click the Submit button in the Manage Port Configuration section of the page. h.
Requires the System Upgrade/Update Functions access right To downgrade VTS 1. Verify that at least 1GB of free disk space is available on the root partition of the VTS appliance before downgrading. 2. If possible, locate the system restore image that was created before the system was upgraded. The version of the system restore image should match the version to which you will be downgrading. Store this image in a safe location. 3. If necessary, log in to the VTS web interface.
Error displayed when downgrading a system that does not have a capacity license. The following error will be seen when downgrading a system that does not have a capacity license: mv: cannot stat '/usr/local/tape/etc/capacity_license': No such file or directory This is a benign error that can be ignored. (TL-6844) Reverting to a previous version may revert the system to an unexpected version.
Upgrade fails because TapeServer process could not be stopped. Processes can be started intermittently by the web server (such as the System Status page) and cron jobs. If one of these processes runs a process from /usr/local/tape/bin during an upgrade, the upgrade could fail. (TL-5007) WORKAROUND: Stop all processes using the service vts-services stop command and then attempt the upgrade again. If this workaround does not result in the processes being stopped, contact Support for assistance.
Resolved Issues and Enhancements The following changes have been incorporated into the software since the 6.04.05 release. Hardware, configuration, and hardware replacement QLogic driver has failover on by default. This conflicts with the use of multipath. The Quick Start Guide now instructs the user to disable failover on the driver. (TL-6460, EAR 7554) Odd characters appeared on-screen when configuring system clock via PuTTY session.
General operations Could not create jobs because the process required for jobs was not running. When a Stacked Export job was the first job to run, a process (RPC Server) that required a particular class to exist for resolution failed in the previous release. To account for that, the web interface is preloaded in the job scheduler process and ensures the process has all classes it needs. (TL-6251) Job process stopped after logrotate and no jobs could start until you rebooted.
Backup performance could be impacted and debug log could grow significantly if cinfo was performed on a bad virtual tape file. The following message appeared in the debug log: [cinfo /VAULT01/SAVE/TM0131 vt] vt_read_block_header: Unable to read block size information. Wanted 4, got 0. This no longer occurs. (TL-5077) Web interface Incorrect link shown after Set Refresh Rate for System Status was performed.
Tape-to-Tape export Tape-to-Tape Exports now available. This release of VTS renamed the Native Export job type; it is now named Tape-to-Tape Export. When you create a Tape-to-Tape Export job, you can choose the format of the content when it is written to physical tape (virtual tape format or host-native format). In addition, if Data Encryption is enabled, content remains encrypted when exported to physical tape (if virtual tape format is selected).
System restore System restore image may have had duplicate database entries. Applying a system restore image may have added duplicate database entries, causing the system to malfunction. This has been fixed. (TL-4003) Utilities and services HP System Insight Manager has been upgraded to version 6.3. HP SIM version 6.3.0.22 is now used on installed systems and upgraded systems. Also, the HP SIM software is no longer available on the VTS installation media. It is now maintained on a separate DVD.
Online help enhanced to list when SMTP notifications are sent. The online help now provides more information about the use of SMTP notifications. (TL-6065) Online help now provides information about restoring replicated tapes from a remote location. Previously, the documentation included instructions for restoring to the originating server.
Known Issues The following known issues, or “errata,” apply to the 8.0 release. The issue tracking number is provided in parentheses. Refer to this number when making inquiries to Technical Support. There is a table of tracking numbers listed in ascending order, with the summary and document section number, in Issue Index on page 61. Hardware, configuration, and hardware replacement Running netconfig on eth1 breaks the eth0 configuration.
Replacing source system on target does not rename files and database records. When a source system is renamed on a target system because of a serial number replacement, all data associated with the original system must be renamed or replaced and permissions adjusted. Contact Support if this condition comes up. (TL-5806) Serial number or replacement system is incorrect after VPD replacement. Target replication system should show new serial number for the source system, which was replaced.
hsm_enable set to YES by default, causing errors when mounting an empty virtual tape. When you attempt to mount an empty virtual tape (no user data in the file, only a label), errors indicating a TSM error occur though TSM is not configured. (TL-6881) WORKAROUND: Set hsm_enable='NO' in the vts.conf file. vtsa user cannot mount virtual tapes. The vtsa user is not able to execute mount commands. (TL-6748) WORKAROUND: Use the bill user instead.
• ems_telnet.pl • hsmdelete.pl • hsmget.pl • hsmput.pl • vtsisc_cancel.pl • vtsisc_mount.pl • vtsisc_unmount.pl • vts_scratch_erase.pl The most common symptom of this problem is that VTS will not be able to log into a host server. Log messages may make it appear as if a password has not been set, though it has been set since encrypted passwords cannot be decrypted.
Encryption allowed on cartridge exceeds cartridge limit. Encryption will cause the size of the data to be larger than when it is unencrypted. If a cartridge contains the maximum amount of data, encrypting the cartridge will cause the cartridge limit to be exceeded. However, no error is given to indicate this situation. The cartridge can be exported but if it is imported to a cartridge of the original cartridge limit size, the import will fail.
Web interface not refreshed after capacity license is applied. After applying a capacity license, the old interface remains displayed and links are missing if you do not refresh the browser. (TL-6866) WORKAROUND: Refresh the browser. Web interface shows login inconsistently. Some pages show that the user is logged in and others show the user as logged out. Others show the user as logged in but you can not get to the page actions, such as downgrading from the System Updates page.
Message on Manage System Licenses page implies that key was saved when it was not. On the Manage System Licenses page, if you select the Update checkbox, paste a license key in the License Key field, and then deselect the Update checkbox, a message is displayed indicating that the license key is already present. The message is displayed even though the key has not been saved. (TL-3175) WORKAROUND: Navigate away from and back to the page.
System Status page lists “No Cartridges” for each GFS vault. A VTS system in a GFS environment may have “No Cartridges” for the vaults, if the GFS environment has had to recover a file, such as a gfs_fsck (file system check) is performed. This issue is due to a permissions problem allowing access to the “lost and found” files. (TL-6515, EAR 7664) System Status page indicates that TEST_UNIT_READY command was processed and complete, but no commands were processed.
Virtual tapes in a VTL are not shown as locked on the Manage Tapes and Pools page. Operations that require a lock still fail as expected for cartridges that are in a VTL. (TL-5969) Manage Virtual Tapes page becomes slow when streaming data and sometimes throws an Internal Server Error. When data-intensive tasks are occurring in the background, accessing the Virtual Tapes page can cause request timeouts. (TL-6667) WORKAROUND: Wait for the operations to complete and try again.
Cartridge Status pop-up dialog is not updated while a cartridge is mounted. If you display the Cartridge pop-up dialog by clicking a link in the size (MB) column of the Configure Tapes and Pools page and then the cartridge is mounted, the data is not updated on the pop-up. (TL-2350) WORKAROUND: View this information when the cartridge is not mounted. Cartridge sizes are not displayed properly. Cartridges created with 1TB, 1GB, or 1MB limits will display, respectively, as 1024GB, 1024MB, and 1024K.
Pool is restored to a cartridge resulting in data not being stored as expected. If an exported pool is restored to a cartridge, the data will not be restored as separate cartridges but will be stored as regular data on one cartridge. (TL-1041) WORKAROUND: Restore pools to pools, not cartridges. Importing a pool into a different pool can create duplicate cartridges. When a pool is imported, the cartridges are created.
Mounts and Locks page allows the removal of locks on VTDs in VTLs. The Mounts and Locks page accessible from the Configure Tapes and Pools page allows the removal of locks on cartridges. It will remove the lock on a cartridge within a VTL, but it will not remove the VTL lock. The correct functionality should be that it does not show cartridges that have the VTL lock, and it does not allow removal of those locks. Note that if you are not using VTLs, you should not use the Mounts and Locks page.
Login button always displayed on Manage Virtual Tapes page. If you log in to the web interface after accessing the Manage Virtual Tapes page, the Login button is displayed until you navigate away from the page and then navigate back. (TL-4429) External Data No rescan available on External Data page. (TL-6604) WORKAROUND: Use the browser's Clear Cache option to rescan the drive to read its current tape information.
Too many values displayed when an error occurs with a LUN during VTD creation. When creating a VTD and an error occurs with an existing LUN, the array of possible values that is displayed can be very large. Instead, the first five possible values should be presented. (TL-3117) VTD names and serial numbers should not be case-sensitive. When creating VTDs, the web interface checks the case of the specified VTD name and serial number.
Cannot create a VTL if LUNs 0, 1, and 2 are not free. If you try to create a VTL, it will fail and indicate that there can only be one VTL per bus, though no other VTLs are defined. LUN 0, 1, and 2 must be free. (TL-4063) Cannot delete VTD in VTL. If you edit a VTL and reduce the drive count to remove a VTD that is included in a VTL, an “Insufficient number of VTD licenses” message may be displayed if you are at the maximum number of VTDs for your license and you cannot delete the VTD.
Must click Restore CUSTOM Defaults button twice to display the “Users and Groups” and “Rights” sections of the page. When you click the Restore CUSTOM Defaults button, the “Users and Groups” and “Rights” sections of the Access Control page are not displayed. You must click the button again to display these sections and restore the custom defaults. (TL-378) Certificate Management Revoking original certificate indicates “Certificate revoked” though it cannot be.
Incorrect error message displayed if attempting to add locked cartridge to library. If the library is full when adding a cartridge to a library, check the Mounts and Locks page to determine if the cartridge is locked. If so, you may receive this message: “Unable to insert cartridge because magazine is full.” A locked cartridge cannot be added to a library, but the error message is incorrect in this case. (TL-4004) WORKAROUND: Resolve the locked condition and then add the cartridge to the library.
editing the definition, the edit operation is allowed even if there are still Physical and Logical Libraries that reference that library definition. The Edit page shows a warning that it is not allowed, but it does not prevent the edit. If the Library definition is edited without all library entities (including Logical and Physical) associated with the Library definition deleted, the web interface and backend protocol layers become inconsistent.
No notification that restore fails because remote key server was not added after restoring from a disaster recovery site. The local key server should be removed prior to restoring the key database. The web interface should notify the user when a restore from a disaster recovery site fails because a local key server already exists. (TL-4399) Key database restore fails if an IP address is used instead of a hostname.
Decrypting a large cartridge with an invalid key takes too long to fail. If the key is invalid or if an incorrect path was given that did not contain the correct key, VTS should fail more quickly. Instead, it can take up to 10 minutes before failing. There are no warning messages indicating that this could take a while for large files. (TL-3052) Creating cartridges in an encrypted pool when Data Encryption is not running generated confusing message.
When restoring a Data Encryption key database, initial attempts may fail and indicate that the file is not found. When restoring a Data Encryption key database with the Restore from the Disaster Recovery option, initial attempts may fail and indicate that the local backup copy is not found, which must be present to do a remote restore. (TL1239) WORKAROUND: Wait five minutes and attempt a restore from disaster recovery again.
Adding a key database backup host fails but lists erroneous error message if too many characters are specified in the fields. When adding a key database backup host and entering very long host names (such as 256 characters), user names (256 characters), or destinations (512 characters), adding the host will fail but the message may indicate that the system was not responding. (TL-1056) Data Encryption automated key database backups do not log their backups to the event.log file.
Scan/Cleanup Scan/Cleanup cannot erase cartridges in VTLs. When running Scan/Cleanup, locked cartridges in a VTL will not be erased after migration even though they meet the criteria to be erased. (TL-4326) WORKAROUND: Disable the VTL or remove the virtual tape from the VTL. Retention time is not displayed correctly on Scan/Cleanup page. Retention is shown in weeks until retention time exceeds a year, then it is shown in years.
Importing cartridges with similar names can be imported to the same virtual tape. If a library has two cartridges with similar names (first 6 characters the same) and they are selected for import, they can be imported to the same virtual tape. This is an error condition that can be avoided by having uniqueness in the first six characters of the cartridge. (TL-6530) WORKAROUND: Tape libraries attached to VTS should be configured to ignore the media version (the Lax at the end of a barcode).
Using the Import/Export interface results in an error in encr_key.log. Invoking an import or tape-to-tape export results in the “Error: missing device specification!” error in encr_key.log. This appears when a pool, a single encrypted tape, or single nonencrypted tape is selected. The message is benign and can safely be ignored. (TL-1035) Import fails if virtual tape meets pool cartridge quota when it is exported.
Login path for CommVault 8 set to /opt/galaxy/Base/qlogin. The path should be set to /opt/simpana/Base. (TL-5707) WORKAROUND: Use the following commands as root: mkdir /opt/galaxy ln -s /opt/simpana/Base /opt/galaxy/Base Utilities do not support X11 forwarding. If X11 forwarding is enabled in the configuration of the SSH putty session, netconfig commands will fail. (TL-5702) Unmigrating encrypted pool fails.
Backup management application support Restoring individual files from export that spanned files using CA ARCserve fails. (TL-6517) WORKAROUND: Restore the entire backup to obtain the single file. TSM running on a host system fails to label tapes when the VTDs are Ultrium. Though the drives are detected and associated with the library, when it tries to load the tapes for labeling, an error is displayed indicating it cannot label the volume.
Status of replication job that failed due to an error is displayed as cancelled. When an error is detected in a replication export or import job that causes the job to be terminated because the “stop on error” flag has been set, the job's overall status will show as “cancelled”. (TL-5862) WORKAROUND: Check the job status details to determine the actual reason why the job ended. Re-replication of virtual tape is possible but cannot be restored.
Virtual tapes are split though target vault is invalid. A virtual tape is split into multiple streams during a remote export even when the target vault is invalid. Once the file is split, replication will fail due to the vault being invalid. It should detect the error before splitting the file. (TL-4267) Rebooting while Replication is splitting files leaves a running job.
Labeling a virtual tape in an Autocopy pool logs error messages in ems.log. Messages similar to the following are logged when a tape in an Autocopy pool is labeled. Sat May 26 07:28:36 2007 TANDEM.TAPE.G06 000659 : DRIVE Sat May 26 07:28:36 2007 doAutoCopy: 2. Sat May 26 07:28:36 2007 autocopy_Host for TOOL14 DEV4: 07-05-26 13:20:09 \DEV4. STATUS 1512 - TOOL14 TAPE DISMOUNTED FROM DEV4: DISMOUNT Cartridge: TOOL14, DEV4: ems_telnet.AUTOCOPY Error is not configured.
Enable Keep Alive and Enable Host Notifications must be selected to enable keep-alive messaging. You must enable both options to enable EMS keep-alive messages. (TL-3152) When mounting a cartridge over another using the web interface, the second does not get mounted if the first cartridge is already dismounted. The web interface may not always be accurate in the state of the tapes in the tape drive. (TL-1752) WORKAROUND: Refresh the interface and try again.
Subject Line Prefix not used in email notifications. Though you can specify a Subject Line Prefix when configuring SMTP settings for email notifications, the prefix is not used. (TL-5137) Clustering (GFS) Cannot resolve the hostname in a GFS environment without a DNS server. Currently, you cannot configure GFS to use a fully qualified domain name without the use of DNS. (TL-6874) Virtual tapes are unusable by other systems if one clustered system crashes.
HP SIM and GFS conflict. A component of HP SIM could conflict with the port used by GFS. This could cause one process to stop functioning if the other one is correctly working. (TL-5252) Activity log is not displaying messages in date order. The latest job should be on the top. (TL-4299) WORKAROUND: Use the Clear Log button to correct the UI. Cannot open message log TAR file. If you attempt to open a message log TAR file, an “Invalid Archive” error is displayed.
Incomplete image created when creating a system restore image with insufficient disk space. If there is not enough space to create a system restore image, the user should be notified that there is not enough space. Instead, “URL not found” message is displayed and files are omitted from the TAR file. (TL-4176) System restore does not handle database restore failure well. If a problem occurs while restoring the database during a system restore, the system may be left with a partial or no database.
Troubleshooting This section includes information about how to troubleshoot problems and notes about items that may need clarification. Installation, upgrades, updates, and restore No disk space available after an upgrade. After an upgrade, there exists the potential to exceed the amount of available disk space. (TL-3885) WORKAROUND: Regularly remove unused files, such as those located in the /tmp and / var/log directories. /usr/local/tape/log/vts-post-install.log contains FATAL error messages.
VTD with no connection to a logical tape is still presented on the bus. If a VTD is created and connected to a logical tape then the VTD is disconnected, the VTD is still shown to the client. An SG device is created and an Inquiry command succeeds. However, a Status command does not and the VTD cannot actually be used. (TL-2324) I/O fails to resume after Fibre Channel cable is disconnected and HBA times out.
Error message displayed on console after the system is booted for the first time. Messages similar to the following are displayed on the console the first time VTS is booted: Mounting other filesystems: [ OK ] Starting hp-ilo:/opt/hp/hp-ilo/drivers/char/hp_ilo/CpqCiKlx.c: In functionoctl32_handler': /opt/hp/hp-ilo/drivers/char/hp_ilo/CpqCiKlx.c:680: warning: assignment makes pointer from integer without a cast /opt/hp/hp-ilo/drivers/char/hp_ilo/CpqCiKlx.
Browser may display old data or errors if not refreshed. If an unexpected error occurs or data appears to be old, refresh the browser. Old data is cached and may need to be cleared. (TL-1662) File size of a mounted tape being written may not be updated. If a virtual tape is mounted and being written to, the size shown on the page may not be updated until the tape is dismounted.
AutoCopy An error message from ems_telnet.pl indicates that AutoCopy is not configured. For AutoCopy to work as designed, manual procedures that mount a tape must end with unmounting the tape. AutoCopy depends on receiving mount and unmount messages through EMS to work correctly, and when a tape is manually mounted, the EMS subsystem is unaware of this. When the manual operation is completed, the tape must be unmounted manually. (TL-1480) VTSPolicy Incremental backup backs up all cartridges.
