Virtual TapeServer 8.0 Release Notes
Introduction | 1
Introduction
Virtual TapeServer (VTS) is a fully integrated virtual tape, hardware and software solution.
VTS offers complete disaster recovery capabilities. As a primary repository for data center
backups, VTS can be used as secondary tiered storage for replicated data to meet disaster
recovery requirements.
Overview of features
Release 8.0 introduces the following new features and support to VTS:
• Virtual tape library (VTL) support — VTLs can now be created and used for backups. New
VTL web interface pages are also now provided.
• Tape-to-Tape export — The Native Export job type is now named Tape-to-Tape Export.
When you create a Tape-to-Tape Export job, you can choose the format of the content
when it is written to physical tape (virtual tape format or host-native format). You can
export to a library or a standalone tape drive. In addition, if Data Encryption is enabled,
content remains encrypted when exported to physical tape (if virtual tape format is
selected). Refer to the Configuration Guide and online help for complete information.
• Stacked export — Previously known as “migration”, this release provides stacked export
jobs, for exporting data to one or more physical tapes through the use of a backup
management application.
• Job management — You can now export and import data through the use of jobs,
including the following:
• Disabled jobs — Jobs can be marked disabled using the Edit Job page, to allow for
maintenance windows and temporary cessation of jobs. After a job is re-enabled, it
runs as scheduled.
• Job cancellation — You can now cancel any replication (export or import) and native
export to a library (export or import) job.
• New job options — Job options are now available to allow pool and VTL selections for
the payload.
• Replication job and replication destination for VTS — The Replicate job is now available,
for replicating virtual tapes to other VTS servers. See documentation for further details.
• New Manage Virtual Tapes page. See the online help on the Manage Virtual Tapes page
for more information
• Newly added remote export jobs, which enable you to replicate virtual tapes from one
VTS server to one or more others.
• Newly added mount jobs, which enable you to perform immediate or scheduled
mounts of a virtual tape on a virtual tape drive.
• Export report — A new Export Reports page lists virtual tapes that were successfully
exported by stacked export jobs. You can view the list on the web interface, and you can
save the list to a comma-separated values (CSV) file, which saves all tapes to the file (not
just the tapes listed on the page).
• Storage report — A new report is available that indicates the space used on the system. It
lists the total amount and used amount for every vault, data partition, and pool on the
system.
