Virtual TapeServer 8.0 Release Notes

Incorrect error message displayed if attempting to add locked cartridge to
library. If the library is full when adding a cartridge to a library, check the Mounts and
Locks page to determine if the cartridge is locked. If so, you may receive this message:
“Unable to insert cartridge because magazine is full.” A locked cartridge cannot be added
to a library, but the error message is incorrect in this case. (TL-4004)
WORKAROUND: Resolve the locked condition and then add the cartridge to the library.
VTDs report the density of the cartridge based on the drive type, not cartridge
type. If a cartridge is initialized as an Ultrium3 and is added to a magazine or VTL of
Ultrium4 drives, the cartridge is displayed with Ultrium4 density. This prevents the
cartridge from being re-initialized as Ultrium3. However, writes to the cartridge works.
You should set tape size limits to ensure tapes will fit on the physical tape and keep all
the drive types within a VTL consistent. (TL-3672)
Incorrect tape type is loaded if mixed tape types are used in a VTL. If multiple
tape types are used when creating VTDs, the wrong tape type may be loaded. Mode pages
are not sent to the host and, therefore, the wrong tape type may be loaded. Tape markers
and labels at the end of the tape are reported as missing or the tape's density is 6250,
which isn't specified for the type of cartridge loaded in the media library device. (TL-3766)
WORKAROUND: Do not use mixed tape types in the same VTL.
Bulk ejects from AS/400 do not eject media. When issuing bulk ejects from AS/400,
AS/400 shows that all requested tapes have been ejected, but if the tapes are added back
to the library and then the AS/400 screen is refreshed (by pressing F5). Only the last tape
in the bulk eject list has been moved to the EJECTED category while the rest of the tapes
display the INSERTED category. (TL-3742)
WORKAROUND: Perform an F5 on the AS/400 screen after issuing bulk ejects.
Cannot create more than 999 virtual tapes. When attempting to create a VTL with
more than 999 slots, an error is thrown. The error is “Successfully added Library
connection. Cartridge XXX1000 exceeded more than 6 characters. Not all storage
elements were populated.” The first 999 cartridges are created and placed in the
magazine. (TL-3825)
WORKAROUND: Create the cartridges using the Cartridge Maintenance page and then
add them to the VTL on the Manage Virtual Tapes page.
One VTL created if the same target is used when creating multiple SCSI VTLs
using AS/400. If multiple SCSI VTLs are created using the same target (but on different
busses), all VTDs are associated to one VTL. The BTLIs are correct but there is only one
VTL shown and all VTDs are associated to this. (TL-3874)
WORKAROUND: Use a different target for the SCSI libraries on the different ports.
Messages are displayed on the console when locked tapes are scanned in a VTL.
Messages similar to the following are displayed for locked cartridges in a VTL. These
messages can be ignored. (TL-3897)
Mon Nov 23 16:55:10 2009 [26067]: Error: meta data could not be
retrieved for /VAULT01/DFVTLPool/DFV255.
LTO 4 and LTO 3 drives do not work with VTL. Errors are generated when
migrating a cartridge using NetBackup to a TS3500 VTL configured with LTO 4 or LTO 3
tape drives. Do not use ULT3580-TD4 virtual tape drives with MSL6000 Library
emulation. (TL-2885)
