Introduction Virtual TapeServer (VTS) is a fully integrated virtual tape, hardware and software solution. VTS offers complete disaster recovery capabilities. As a primary repository for data center backups, VTS can be used as secondary tiered storage for replicated data to meet disaster recovery requirements. Overview of features Release 8.2 introduces the following new features and support to VTS: • GFS has been updated.
Installation and Configuration This section describes how to access information about installing and configuring release 8.2 of VTS. It also provides compatibility notes. Installation, upgrade, update, and downgrade The following documentation provides information about installing, upgrading, updating, and downgrading VTS: Initial installation and configuration is described in the Virtual TapeServer Quick Start Guide. Instructions to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.

Virtual device emulation VTS allows multiple hosts to perform simultaneous backups to the VTS server. However, the number of simultaneous backups affects performance of each backup, so it is recommended to limit the number of simultaneous backups. Note Only the first channel of the SAS ports is used for VTD and VTL creation when the port is configured as a virtual (target) mode port. If the port is configured as a physical (initiator) mode port, all four channels in the port are available.
The following library types are supported, including the drive types supported within each: HP MSL6000 • Quantum SDLT320 • Quantum DLT7000 • HP Ultrium 1 • HP Ultrium 3 • HP LTO3 IBM TS3500 (3584) • IBM ULT3580-TD1 • IBM ULT3580-TD3 • IBM ULT3580-TD4 IBM TS3100 • ULT3580-HH5 Note This is the only VTL supported for SAS AS/400 hosts, and it is only supported on IBM I v6r1 SAS connected hosts.
From IBM iSeries (AS/400) hosts: • IBM Backup Recovery & Media Services (BRMS) V6R1 and V5R4 • Help/Systems Robot/SAVE 11.0 From RedHat hosts: • Symantec Veritas NetBackup 6.5, 6.5.4, and 7.0 IBM Tivoli Storage Manager version 5.5 was tested and is supported for installation and use on the VTS server. The following backup applications were tested and are supported for installation and use on the VTS server: Symantec Veritas NetBackup 6.5, 6.5.4, and 7 IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 5.5 and 6.
Upgrade and Downgrade This section provides procedures for upgrading and downgrading the VTS appliance(s) in your environment. It also provides a list of known issues related to upgrade and downgrade. Upgrading to 8.2 You can upgrade to 8.2 from version 8.0 or 8.1 only. During the upgrade, a backup of /usr/ local/tape/ is created, the upgrade is performed, and new system RPMs are installed. After the upgrade completes, you can view the upgrade logs from the Manage Logs page of the web interface.
9. Select From Local File on the following page: 10. In the Location of Revision Update File field, type the full path to the UPG file. 11. Click UPGRADE. 12. Click OK to continue. Note Upgrading may take a while. Do not navigate away from the page until the upgrade completes. 13. Confirm that the following message is displayed: Completing Upgrade... Revision Update Successful! System must now be rebooted. 14. Click REBOOT to complete the update. 15. Restart the web browser and launch the web interface.
Downgrading VTS Complete the following steps if you want to downgrade VTS (to 8.0). The following is performed by the downgrade process: • Backup of /usr/local/tape/ is restored • System restore image is restored • VTS is downgraded • System restore image is deleted Note Operating system RPMs that were installed during an upgrade are not reverted. If desired, you must manually uninstall these RPMs. Also, it is recommended that you downgrade all appliances in your VTS environment.
Upgrade and downgrade issues Links missing from System Updates page after downgrade. After downgrading, links may be missing on the System Updates page.(TL-7611) WORKAROUND: Log out, shut down the browser, and then relaunch a browser and log in again. Reverting to a previous version may revert the system to an unexpected version.
Resolved Issues and Enhancements The following changes have been incorporated into the software since the 8.0 release. Hardware, configuration, and hardware replacement Running netconfig -m static two or more times corrupted /etc/hosts file. If the netconfig command was run multiple time with the -m static option, the /etc/hosts file could be corrupted on subsequent runs, which may have rendered functions inoperable. This has been fixed.
RPM warnings occurred during upgrade. When RPMs were installed on a system, there were occasional conflicts where the new RPM had a configuration file, which was different than the configuration file currently on the system. When this happened, the configuration file on the system was renamed to xxx.rpmsave and the new configuration file inside the RPM was delivered. This new configuration file may have been new/ different settings than the previous configuration.
General operations Security restrictions on OS (Linux) passwords now enforced. An acceptable password must comprise eight characters, including one numeric character, one uppercase character, one lowercase character, and one other (non-alphanumeric) character. VTS now enforces these restrictions.
Not all users had access to the documentation on the About page. Now, any user logging into the system can access the About page and the documents linked from the page. (TL-6934) Apply Revision Update page required the upgrade package to be local. Now, you can upload this file from a remote server. (TL-5253) Could not restart the web interface from the command line. If the service httpd restart command did not work, a reboot was required to access the web interface.
Removing virtual tape from VTL did not give a process indicator or success or failure message. No process indicator was displayed and no failure message was generated if a virtual tape could not be removed from the VTL. This has been fixed. (TL4325) Deleting a VTL and viewing the Manage Virtual Tapes page displayed a Flash notice. If a VTL was deleted and then the Manage Virtual Tapes page was accessed or refreshed to display the library's cartridges, the stale page may have caused an error.
AutoCopy, Instant DR, and Replication Using AutoCopy to a GFS system may have slowed other backups. When Autocopy ran, all files were scanned on the target storage to obtain the list of files present. If the target storage location was in a GFS environment, this scan could take some time. The scan locked each file as it examined it. The locking of the files could cause backups on the target storage location to run slower as they waited for the file to be unlocked and available.
Data Encryption (SecureVTS) Using UNIX system as Data Encryption remote host may have failed. When trying to configure Data Encryption and setting up the remote backup host, the backup failed if a Solaris host was used. Other UNIX systems may also have caused this failure. This has been fixed. (TL-6889, EAR 7956) Last EMS message was repeatedly processed during keep-alive. Previously, after a keep-alive was issued, VTS tried to rerun the last mount or dismount that it had processed.
Utilities and services HP SIM displayed very little information. If the HP System Management Homepage shows little information, it may be that the SNMP configuration or the hpasm configuration is incorrect. The default configuration files may be found on the HPSIM install CD, and may be used to replace those already installed on in /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf and /etc/hpasmrc, respectively. (TL-7271) HP SIM was not installed on the newly manufactured DL185 shipped with 8.0.
Known Issues The following known issues, or “errata,” apply to the 8.2 release. The issue tracking number is provided in parentheses. Refer to this number when making inquiries to Technical Support. There is a table of tracking numbers listed in ascending order, with the summary and document section number, in Issue Index on page 62. Hardware, configuration, and hardware replacement Syntax error occurs when setting hostname using netconfig and DHCP is configured.
SCSI virtual devices may not appear immediately to AS/400. (TL-7320) WORKAROUND: Reboot VTS and the device should be discovered. netconfig will not continue if hardware error occurs on disconnected port. netconfig should continue even if there is an error on another port (that is not currently being configured by netconfig). (TL-7117) WORKAROUND: Resolve the hardware error. netconfig will not allow setting a non-default static route.
Kernel panic may occur if SCSI VTD is edited while host is scanning devices. If you change the bus and LUN of a SCSI VTD and the host is scanning devices, the system may panic and the web interface may stop responding. (TL-4018) ACPI Exception messages are displayed and logged during boot. At boot time, messages similar to the following may be displayed on the system console and in /var/log/ dmesg. These messages are benign and may be ignored.
Warning messages during boot are displayed. These messages are displayed on the console every time VTS boots and are ignorable. (TL-5954) /var/www/media/app/models/transfer_agent.rb :18 warning: already initialized constant STATUS_FAILURE_EXCEPTION /var/www/media/app/models/transfer_agent.rb :19 warning: already initialized constant STATUS_FAILURE_SHUTDOWN Kernel panic displayed on console.
traceInit messages are logged to /var/log/messages. Messages similar to the following are logged to /var/log/messages. These messages can be ignored. (TL-3151) Jun 2 13:20:54 VTS06 slave: traceInit: Opening /proc/crds-trace failed, No such file or directory Failures may occur if an autoloading pool contains an invalid cartridge. Only valid cartridges should be added to pools within vaults. If other files are there, inconsistent or unpredictable behavior may occur.
Web interface This section has been subdivided to better classify the issues. General Vault mounted using multipathing is not listed on Manage File System Checks page. (TL-7610) Cannot view list in Firefox if deleting a large number of cartridges. When deleting a large number of cartridges using FireFox, the popup window may appear wider than the browser window, making it impossible to select the buttons. In Firefox, the cartridges are listed in one long line.
Web interface may fail to allow the virtual media removal from the virtual tape drive. VTS supports the SCSI command to prevent a medium from being removed from a tape drive. If removal is being prevented by the host server, the VTS web interface may fail to allow the virtual media removal from the virtual tape drive. (TL-5063) WORKAROUND: Use the host server to remove media instead of the web interface to remove the media. Editing a VTD without a license causes the VTD to be deleted.
The selected menu item does not correspond to the displayed page when the browser Back or Forward buttons are used to navigate the web interface. If you use the Back or Forward button provided by the browser to navigate to pages on the web interface, the previously viewed menu item is displayed on the main page but the highlighted menu item does not go back or forward to the corresponding menu item.
Manage Virtual Tapes and Manage Tapes and Pools (Advanced Operations) Pools may appear empty on the Manage Virtual Tapes page while the virtual tape cache is being built or rebuilt. Populating the virtual tape cache when there is a large number of virtual tapes on the system can take some time. This can result in some pools showing as empty because they have not been processed yet. It may appear that virtual tapes have been removed until all pools have been processed.
Cartridge size check done on Cartridge Maintenance page instead of Pool Maintenance page. Though you specify a maximum cartridge size on the Pool Maintenance page, the system does not check for the size; it checks on the Cartridge Maintenance page. (TL-3772) Cannot click button to confirm deletion of cartridges if deleting many. When deleting many cartridges, the confirmation dialog box extends off the screen and does not show the OK button.
Cannot cancel pending mounts. The web interface indicates “Cancelled 0 pending mounts” but pending mounts are re-queued and given new reqnums every six seconds. The clearmount process attempts to match the reqnum of the pending mount. If they match, the pending mount is cancelled. If they do not match, the pending mount is not cancelled, as indicated by this message in the interface and log: “Error: clearmount found no match in mount queue for reqnum 000000663”.
Data size incorrect on Manage Virtual Tapes page after data change during a stacked export. Data sizes may vary between the Configure Tapes and Pools page and the Manage Virtual Tapes page if a stacked export is being performed and then new data is written to the cartridge while the stacked export is in progress. (TL-4953) WORKAROUND: For accurate cartridge size information, view cartridge information using the pop-up dialog box on the Manage Virtual Tapes or Configure Tapes and Pools page.
Manage Virtual Tapes page becomes unresponsive when trying to display a VTL that was created when a pool with the same name exists. If you create a VTL using the same name base that is used by an existing pool, the page hangs when you try to filter by cartridge or pool. The production log shows that the page is looking for the original VLM that would have been created if a pool by that name did not already exist.
Manage Virtual Devices (Manage Connections) VTD type is displayed incorrectly when editing a VTD. When you edit a SCSI VTD, the FC option is selected and the SCSI option is disabled, so you cannot save the VTD without switching its type and to a different port. (TL-7651) WORKAROUND: Delete the VTD and the recreate it. Poor performance accessing Virtual Devices page. When attempting to access the Virtual Devices page, it can take up to 60 seconds to render the page.
Cannot modify target ID of Fibre Channel VTD on Manage Virtual Devices page. You cannot modify a Fibre Channel VTD's target ID. (TL-5975) WORKAROUND: Delete the VTD and re-add it with new target ID. Incorrect error message displayed when attempting to create a VTL on a bus that has more drives than LUNs. When attempting to create a VTL on a bus that has more drives than LUNs, the error message is incorrect.
Certain Access Control settings cause each update cycle to prompt for a password. If Access Control for operations is set to one of the following, the web interface prompts for a password three times every time a page refreshes: 'BASIC access', 'Vault Access', 'Access to All Vaults', 'View System Status', 'Change Refresh Rate', 'Stop and Start TapeServer'. The dialog can be cancelled (and works correctly), but it will prompt again on the next update cycle.
VTL can be deleted if a virtual tape is in a virtual tape drive. The system should prevent the removal when there is a virtual tape in a virtual tape drive. (TL-7545) VTL with up to 31 LUNs can be created though only 30 LUNs are discovered by the host. (TL-7454) WORKAROUND: Create VTLs with no more than 30 VTDs. VTL with “$” in the name does not respond correctly to an inquiry. You cannot delete the VTL either. (TL-7451) WORKAROUND: Do not use $ when creating VTL names.
Incorrect error message displayed if attempting to add locked cartridge to library. If the library is full when adding a cartridge to a library, check the Mounts and Locks page to determine if the cartridge is locked. If so, you may receive this message: “Unable to insert cartridge because magazine is full.” A locked cartridge cannot be added to a library, but the error message is incorrect in this case. (TL-4004) WORKAROUND: Resolve the locked condition and then add the cartridge to the library.
Fibre Channel client lists incorrect number of devices after library definition is modified. If you remove all Library objects associated with a library definition prior to editing the definition, the edit operation is allowed even if there are still Physical and Logical Libraries that reference that library definition. The Edit page shows a warning that it is not allowed, but it does not prevent the edit.
Key database restore fails if an IP address is used instead of a hostname. If a key database was backed up and an IP address was specified, restoring the backup fails. (TL-4033) WORKAROUND: Restore the backup using these steps: a. Delete the IP address entry. b. Add a new entry for the same backup host but use a hostname instead of IP address. (If DNS is not used, add an entry to /etc/hosts). A different backup file name must be used or the previous backup will be overwritten. c.
Creating cartridges in an encrypted pool when Data Encryption is not running generated confusing message. If Data Encryption is not running and you attempt to create cartridges in an encrypted pool, messages similar to the following are displayed. (TL-3048) Created 0 of 10 in P17 of size 2T successfully: Cartridge BBB000 in P17 failed encryption rc=254 Restoring corrupt key database succeeds when it should not.
EMS cancel mount attempts loop indefinitely after a failed mount of an encrypted cartridge. A cancel mount request sent from a NonStop server after an encrypted cartridge could not be serviced by VTS will attempt to cancel and fail the cancel operation for approximately 10 minutes. (TL-1205) WORKAROUND: Restart the TapeServer process. Data Encryption encryption operations performed when no key database backup host is configured causes the web interface to remain busy for up to 10 minutes.
Data Encryption automated key database backups do not log their backups to the event.log file. For details on automated backups, consult the ks_backup.log file. (TL-1001) Error message erroneously logged if the local copy of the key server backup utility changes volumes and is placed in another vault. If the local copy of the key server backup utility changes volumes and is placed in another vault, it may trigger a critical error in the event log indicating a duplicate pool.
Scan/Cleanup Scan/Cleanup cannot erase cartridges in VTLs. When running Scan/Cleanup, locked cartridges in a VTL will not be erased after migration even though they meet the criteria to be erased. (TL-4326) WORKAROUND: Disable the VTL or remove the virtual tape from the VTL. Retention time is not displayed correctly on Scan/Cleanup page. Retention is shown in weeks until retention time exceeds a year, then it is shown in years.
Importing cartridges with similar names can be imported to the same virtual tape. If a library has two cartridges with similar names (first 6 characters the same) and they are selected for import, they can be imported to the same virtual tape. This is an error condition that can be avoided by having uniqueness in the first six characters of the cartridge. (TL-6530) WORKAROUND: Tape libraries attached to VTS should be configured to ignore the media version (the Lax at the end of a barcode).
Import fails if virtual tape meets pool cartridge quota when it is exported. If a quota size is set for a pool and you export a virtual tape in the pool that meets that quota, imports will fail if the cartridge is the maximum size allowed. If the cartridge is not full, imports work fine. (TL-4046) Physical tape could be corrupted if system is rebooted during a tape-to-tape export. (TL-5456) WORKAROUND: If the job log reports that an export failed, re-run the export job.
Stacked exports may appear to fail when they succeed when TSM is in use. TSM may log warnings or errors that do not affect the backup. However, the job may be listed as failed in the job log and web interface. (TL-7221, EAR 8332) WORKAROUND: To be sure the export succeeded, check the hsmput.log file for a line like “Archive processing of '/tmp/Hao4yrDSVk' finished without failure”. Stacked Export and Migrate cannot be used at the same time.
Error, miscellaneous messages logged after successful NetBackup migration. Message similar to the following are logged in the debug log after a successful migration with NetBackup 6.5: Fri Nov 7 14:45:27 2008: [slave_signal_thread 15713] SIGCHLD received while no active child, ignoring it. Fri Nov 7 14:45:32 2008: [cli_tape 0x05000107] ERROR UNKNOWN tape command 0x44 for Id 0 Fri Nov 07 14:46:15 2008: [lsof.pl] Error: lsof.
TSM running on a host system fails to label tapes when the VTDs are Ultrium. Though the drives are detected and associated with the library, when it tries to load the tapes for labeling, an error is displayed indicating it cannot label the volume. (TL-4670) AutoCopy, Instant DR, and Replication Unusable hostname displayed on Hosted Data page if hostname cannot be resolved. Appliance with an unresolved hostname has the name “ip_address.confluencenetworks.com” on the Hosted Data page.
Instant DR job remains running when an SSH connection has not been established to the target system. When initiating a Instant DR job and the SSH connection has not yet been established between VTS servers, the job never ends and stays in a “Running” state. (TL-6832) Communication with remote host fails if ICMP is blocked. Remote hosts used for Data Encryption backups, remote export, Instant DR, and AutoCopy attempt to ping the backup server name.
“We're sorry” message displayed when fetching destination host information. If an error occurs while creating a remote export job, an uninformative error message may be displayed. The web interface should provide a descriptive message. (TL-5586) WORKAROUND: Confirm the configuration settings are correct. Unlabeled cartridges are not copied to target server. Cartridges that are unlabeled and have been written to from the host server are not copied to the target server during AutoCopy.
with the wildcard will be backed up. Checking All Files bypasses this selection process and causes all of the wildcard identified files to be backed up.” The description should read as follows: “Select the All Files checkbox if you want to send all the files listed in the job to the remote system. If you do not select this checkbox, only the newest virtual tape (determined by the timestamp) is transmitted.” (TL-369) EMS Missing EMS messages after VTSPolicy completion.
If a mount command is sent to a non-existent virtual tape drive, VTS reports that the tape is missing, not the drive. When a mount request is received by EMS, if the request specifies a tape drive that is not configured on the VTS, VTS sends a notification to the host that the tape is not found. It should send a notification that the drive is not found. (TL-2293) VTDs intermittently stop on NonStop if tapeserver is restarted repetitively.
Virtual tapes are unusable by other systems if one clustered system crashes. Virtual tapes within a VTL are indicated by an attribute saved on the file system with the virtual tape. The attribute is managed by the system that hosts the virtual tape library. If that VTS hosting the VTL crashes and is never recovered, the attributes will remain on the file system. This issue will likely only affect GFS customers.
HP SIM fails to function properly with a DL185. HP SIM does not show several items on the System Management Homepage. (TL-5246) HP SIM and GFS conflict. A component of HP SIM could conflict with the port used by GFS. This could cause one process to stop functioning if the other one is correctly working. (TL-5252) Activity log is not displaying messages in date order. The latest job should be on the top. (TL-4299) WORKAROUND: Use the Clear Log button to correct the UI.
Incomplete image created when creating a system restore image with insufficient disk space. If there is not enough space to create a system restore image, the user should be notified that there is not enough space. Instead, “URL not found” message is displayed and files are omitted from the TAR file. (TL-4176) System restore does not handle database restore failure well. If a problem occurs while restoring the database during a system restore, the system may be left with a partial or no database.
Troubleshooting This section includes information about how to troubleshoot problems and notes about items that may need clarification. Installation, upgrades, updates, and restore Upgrading to 8.2 upgrades GFS if it is currently installed. If you choose to downgrade, the GFS update will not be reverted, and the newer version of GFS will remain in place. This has been shown to work without issue on downgraded systems. (TL7031) No disk space available after an upgrade.
Must run /usr/local/tape/bin/grub-serial.bash to access GRUB from the console. When VTS boots, you must press a key when prompted if you wish to see the GRUB menu. The /usr/local/tape/bin/grub-serial.bash command will modify the system boot configuration to provide serial console access to the GRUB boot menu. This command must be run as root.
General operations The portmap service is turned off by default. Due to a perceived security vulnerability, the portmap service is turned off. This terminates the VTS's ability to mount filesystems using NFS. (TL-6117, EAR 7149, EAR 7622) WORKAROUND: In the event that NFS is needed in a test environment, start portmap: service portmap start. Performance degrades when a disk fails because disk cache writes are disabled.
/opt/hp/hp-ilo/drivers/char/hp_ilo/CpqCiKlx.c:796: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size /opt/hp/hp-ilo/drivers/char/hp_ilo/CpqCiKlx.c:796: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size ... These messages can be ignored. (TL-2079) The “mount /dev/cdrom” command no longer works because CD media is handled differently. The new VTS operating system (CentOS 5.2) handles removable media mounting differently than in previous releases.
VTL Must remove reservations before disabling a VTL. If you cannot disable a VTL though no virtual tapes are loaded in the VTDs, make sure no reservations exist for one of the VTDs in the VTL. For AS/400, this can be done by “varying off” the MLB device or deallocating the TAP devices. (TL-3837) Multiple tape device types may not be supported in a VTL. Using mixed tape devices within the VTL will only function as well as the host backup software functions in that environment.
VTSPolicy Incremental backup backs up all cartridges. Any incremental backup backs up all cartridges, even unchanged cartridges, within the requested file space. This problem is due to the fact that a virtual cartridge contains user data and metadata. VTS often updates the metadata even when the user data has not changed, causing the change time (ctime) on the file to be updated; this is what causes the file to be backed up even if the user data is unchanged.
