Virtual TapeServer 8.2 Release Notes
Introduction | 1
Introduction
Virtual TapeServer (VTS) is a fully integrated virtual tape, hardware and software solution.
VTS offers complete disaster recovery capabilities. As a primary repository for data center
backups, VTS can be used as secondary tiered storage for replicated data to meet disaster
recovery requirements.
Overview of features
Release 8.2 introduces the following new features and support to VTS:
• GFS has been updated. If VTS is used as part of the Clustering option with GFS installed,
GFS will be upgraded when the system is upgraded to the 8.2 release.
• Improved performance with WAN Acceleration option. Cloud computing, data center
consolidation, hosted disaster recovery, and other IT trends have created a need to move
more data remotely, at higher speeds. The results when using Delta differencing and
other hash approaches to reduce data may vary depending on the structure of the data
set. The 8.2 release includes a WAN Acceleration option to address the root of the problem
(latency) with transferring data across the network. Most of the common transfer protocol
(ftp, rsync, scp, http, etc.) are layered on top of TCP as a network protocol. TCP has
inherent network inefficiencies around packet loss and round trip time latencies when
sending large data across longer distances. WAN Acceleration, based on Aspera fasp
technology, overcomes these issues to optimize the performance of end-to-end data
transfers, ensuring scalability, network efficiency, security, and bandwidth control when
replicating between sites and VTS systems.
• Performance has been improved for single and multiple stream backup jobs.
