Virtual TapeServer 8.2 Release Notes

Troubleshooting | 57
Must run /usr/local/tape/bin/grub-serial.bash to access GRUB from the console.
When VTS boots, you must press a key when prompted if you wish to see the GRUB
menu. The /usr/local/tape/bin/grub-serial.bash command will modify the system boot
configuration to provide serial console access to the GRUB boot menu. This command
must be run as root. In some cases, it may cause the system boot time to be greatly
increased, although the normal boot time is only expected to increase by 10 seconds after
running this command. (TL-2255)
VTDs set as device type 519x show up as FUJITSU M2483B drives. According to
the HP web site, the 5190 drive reports itself as a Fujitsu drive. (TL-1107)
VTD with no connection to a logical tape is still presented on the bus. If a VTD is
created and connected to a logical tape then the VTD is disconnected, the VTD is still
shown to the client. An SG device is created and an Inquiry command succeeds. However,
a Status command does not and the VTD cannot actually be used. (TL-2324)
I/O fails to resume after Fibre Channel cable is disconnected and HBA times out.
If you disconnect the Fibre Channel cable to the VTS for a time period that exceeds the
VTS FC HBA driver timeout value, I/O is interrupted and will not recover. (TL-1886)
WORKAROUND: Rediscover the Fibre Channel devices on the initiator or reboot the
initiator.
SAS connectivity
Error message in AS/400 system operator log when using TS3500 SAS VTL. When
using IBM i V6R1 as the host OS with a TS3500 SAS VTL, the following error may be
displayed in the system operator message log:
*Attention* A tape media or tape unit TAPMLBxx failure was detected
This is due to the lack of support for a SAS TS3500 tape library. The TS3500 is only
supported when used as with a Fibre Channel or SCSI connection. The Beta version of the
TS3100 VTL can be used for IBM i V6R1 host systems that are connected over SAS. (TL-
7518)
AS/400 does not support LTO-3 (ULT3580-TD3) SAS drives. When creating a SAS
VTD or VTL choose the LTO4 (or higher) tape drive type because AS/400 does not support
older models for SAS. (TL-7520)
Unable to perform alternate IPL of AS/400 using SAS. AS/400 systems fail to find
SAS devices for alternate IPL when VTDs are SAS. This also affects the physical drives.
(TL-7589)
WORKAROUND: IBM indicates this should be fixed by applying Program Temporary
Fixes (PTFs) to handle SAS alternate IPL. v6r1 requires MF52482.

Reservation conflict if SAS cable is moved to another port. If a SAS cable is moved
between ports on the VTS appliance or the host server, a different WWPN is presented to
VTS. Therefore, any VTDs or VTLs that had reservations (varied on) are not available on
the new port. (TL-7352)
WORKAROUND: Remove any VTL or VTD reservations (vary off) prior to moving a SAS
cable.
