Enabling and Configuring Role Swapping
To enable “role swapping” of primary and secondary Virtual TapeServer (VTS) servers in your
environment, or to ensure high availability of data across sites, you can use remote export jobs to
export data to remote servers. To use remote export jobs, you must license the Data Replication
feature.
Note This feature is also implemented as replicate jobs, for redundancy or disaster recovery
purposes. For role swapping, you will use remote export jobs only.
Remote export jobs enable you to mirror data on a remote server. Virtual tapes that are exported
this way are stored in vaults (/VAULTxx) on the remote server. This chapter describes how to enable
and configure Virtual TapeServer for remote export jobs. See "Enabling and Configuring Data
Replication" on page 55 for instructions to configure and use replicate jobs.
Note Remote export jobs are available if a capacity license is enabled on the server.
You may need to configure your environment for role swapping if you are
l Performing maintenance on a primary VTS server or site
l Implementing a disaster recovery (DR) plan or testing recovery procedures as part of
disaster-recovery preparedness
You can configure a primary VTS server to transfer data to a secondary (remote) server on a regular
basis. VTS copies data to the remote server over a wide area network (WAN) TCP/IP connection.
Then, after swapping roles, the secondary site becomes the production site. After some period of
time, if desired, you can re-establish the primary site as the production site.
Before configuring remote export jobs, be aware of the following:
l VTS does not determine if virtual tapes are synchronized across servers. There is no way to
inform the administrator of either system that virtual tapes are synchronized or which system
