Introduction Virtual TapeServer (VTS) is a fully integrated virtual tape, hardware and software solution. VTS offers complete disaster recovery capabilities. As a primary repository for data center backups, VTS can be used as secondary tiered storage for replicated data to meet disaster recovery requirements. Overview of features Release 8.4 introduces the following new features and support to VTS. Refer to online help for information about using any of the new features.
Installation and Configuration This section describes how to access information about installing and configuring release 8.4 of VTS. It also provides compatibility notes. Installation, upgrade, update, and downgrade The following documentation provides information about installing, upgrading, updating, and downgrading VTS: Initial installation and configuration is described in the Virtual TapeServerQuick Start Guide. Tape drive emulation VTS supports one virtual tape drive (VTD) per SCSI port and up to four VTDs per Fibre Channel port. All together, a maximum of 32 VTDs are supported per VTS server. For best performance, VTS can perform a maximum of 16 simultaneous backups at one time. Note Virtual tape drives support up to 256KB (262144 byte) blocks. Tape library emulation Multiple virtual tape libraries (VTLs) are supported per VTS system.
Supported Tape Library Emulations for IBM Systems TS3500-TD4-FC • Legacy Systems (v5r4, v5r4 M5) • Power6 (v5r4, v5r4 M5, v6r1, v6r1.1, v7r1) • Power7 (v6r1, v6r1.1, v7r1) TS3500-TD4-SCSI • Power6 (V6r1) Backup management application support Host connections are supported with the following backup applications: From Windows Server 2003 hosts: • IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 5.5 • Symantec Veritas NetBackup 6.5 and 7 • EMC RSA Legato Networker 7.5.2 • CommVault Galaxy 7.
Browser support The following browsers are supported for use viewing the VTS web interface: Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 and above Mozilla Firefox 4.
Upgrade and Downgrade This section provides procedures for upgrading and downgrading the VTS appliance(s) in your environment. It also provides a list of known issues related to upgrade and downgrade. Upgrading to 8.4 You can upgrade to 8.4 from version 8.0, 8.2 or 8.3 only. During the upgrade, a backup of /usr/ local/tape/ is created, the upgrade is performed, and new system RPMs are installed. After the upgrade completes, you can view the upgrade logs from the Manage Logs page of the web interface.
9. Select From Local File if you copied the .UPG file to the /tmp directory on the system or to an attached vault. Then, type the path in the Location of Revision Update File field. Or, select From Uploaded File and then click Browse to navigate to the file on the network or type in the full path of the location. 10. Click UPGRADE. 11. Click OK to continue. Note Upgrading may take a while. Do not navigate away from the page until the upgrade completes. 12.
Downgrading VTS Complete the following steps if you want to downgrade VTS (to 8.0, 8.2 or 8.3). The following is performed by the downgrade process: • Backup of /usr/local/tape/ is restored • System restore image is restored • VTS is downgraded • System restore image is deleted Note Operating system RPMs that were installed during an upgrade are not reverted. If desired, you must manually uninstall these RPMs. Also, it is recommended that you downgrade all appliances in your VTS environment.
Upgrade and downgrade issues Upgrade may fail because TapeServer process could not be stopped. Processes can be started intermittently by the web server (such as the System Status page) and cron jobs. If one of these processes runs a process from /usr/local/tape/bin during an upgrade, the upgrade could fail. (TL-5007, EAR-10253) WORKAROUND: Stop all processes using the service vts-services stop command and then attempt the upgrade again.
Resolved Issues and Enhancements The following changes have been incorporated into the software since the 8.3 release. Hardware, configuration, and hardware replacement In some instances, an IP Address could not be added to eth1 using the netconfig command. When the netconfig command was used to add the IP Address, “ip_addr undetermined” was returned. This issue has been resolved. (TL-8206) The netconfig command would not continue if a hardware error occurred on a disconnected port.
Jobs (general) A job name which contained a space or special characters would cause the job to fail with the error: “Missing backupSystem in jobset”. Now, any spaces in the name are converted to underscores when the job is saved. Special characters are not allowed in job names. (TL-7736, EAR-9006) Manage Virtual Tapes and Manage Tapes and Pools (Advanced Operations) The Data Size column of the Virtual Tapes pages reported 0 Bytes in use for all cartridges.
VTL Entering a VTL serial number larger than 10 digits caused the creation of the VTL to fail. The input field for the VTL serial number is now limited to 10 digits. (TL8195) A tape that was moved from a drive to the I/O port in a VTL, would only be partially removed from the VTL and would be unusable afterwards. Now, the tape will be moved out of the VTL and placed on the shelf where the I/O Port leaves it.
Policy Based Actions If a pool had multiple policies defined, only the first policy triggered would run. This issue has been resolved. (TL-8210, EAR-10654) When a pool was renamed the policies associated with the pool were not transferred to the updated pool. This issue is no longer seen in version 8.4. (TL-7897) AutoCopy, Instant DR, and Replication If an IDR job was run with the incorrect job name, the message: “Missing backup System” was erroneously reported.
Utilities and services Each hour multiple entries were written to the var/log/messages log concerning automounts. The entries were similar to: “Mar 17 16:01:12 vtslibg4 automount[5209]: create_udp_client:90: hostname lookup failed: Operation not permitted”. This issue has been resolved. (TL-7335, EAR-10347, EAR-9583) The error “ERROR> keepalive.cgi:170 keepalive - The indicated process is not running” appeared in the job log after a job successfully completed. This issue has been resolved.
Known Issues The following known issues, or “errata,” apply to the 8.4 release. The issue tracking number is provided in parentheses. Refer to this number when making inquiries to Technical Support. There is a table of tracking numbers listed in ascending order, with the summary and document section number, in Issue Index on page 55. Hardware, configuration, and hardware replacement Adding or removing a HBA may cause the port configuration to change.
Connection issues may occur when using 4Gb Fibre Channel cards. Connection issues can occur when using the 4Gb Fibre Channel card directly connected to AS/400 on v5r4. When it comes up as private loop, there are issues seeing the devices. Also, if the host resets, VTS runs out of resources in the driver and the VTD is lost. Contact Support if this issue occurs. (TL-6698, EAR-7772, EAR-7918, EAR-9416) Compression setting for tape drives is not altered from the default value after it has powered on.
No checks are made for duplicate file names when moving a virtual cartridge from a /DATAxx partition to a /VAULTxx partition. This may cause issues if the same filename is used in different VAULTs or pools. (TL-8236) vtsa user cannot mount CD or DVD. The vtsa user is not able to execute mount commands. (TL-6748) WORKAROUND: Use the bill user instead. Incorrect serial number of SCSI VTD is displayed in the System Tools menu with V7iOS (V7R1).
• ems_telnet.pl • hsmdelete.pl • hsmget.pl • hsmput.pl • vtsisc_cancel.pl • vtsisc_mount.pl • vtsisc_unmount.pl • vts_scratch_erase.pl The most common symptom of this problem is that VTS will not be able to log into a host server. Log messages may make it appear as if a password has not been set, though it has been set since encrypted passwords cannot be decrypted.
To disable ISC, two parameters must be set. The ems_InterSystemCommunication_hosts and interSystemCommunication_enable parameters must be set to indicate that ISC should be disabled. Otherwise, ISC will still be enabled. (TL-0240) WORKAROUND: To disable ISC, set these parameters in the VTS configuration file: interSystemCommunication_enable=”NO” ems_InterSystemCommunication_hosts=”ems_InterSystemCommunication_host s=”” Then, stop ISC from the Manage System Tasks page.
Editing a VTD without a license causes the VTD to be deleted. If the license is removed and then you attempt to edit a VTD, the system deletes the VTD. (TL-3962) Tape can be mounted in deleted VTD and the tape remains locked. If you delete a VTD, VTS still allows you to mount a virtual tape in the deleted VTD. No data is lost but the tape is locked. This occurs if multiple windows are used and actions are performed in one window and affect the actions taken in the other.
System Status page indicates that TEST_UNIT_READY command was processed and complete, but no commands were processed. The System Status page indicates that a TEST_UNIT_READY command was completed. If the user looks at this to determine if VTS is communicating with the host, it is misleading. The TEST_UNIT_READY command is command 0x0.
A pool can not be moved to a different vault using the Tapes and Pools page. The help for the Tapes and Pools page incorrectly states that you can change the name for any field except the pool name. The help should state that you can change the name for any field except the VAULT name. (TL-8269, EAR-10250) The Last Mounted column on the Manage Virtual Tapes page shows the last time the virtual tape was modified, not necessarily the last time the virtual tape was mounted.
Cartridge size check done on Cartridge Maintenance page instead of Pool Maintenance page. Though you specify a maximum cartridge size on the Pool Maintenance page, the system does not check for the size; it checks on the Cartridge Maintenance page. (TL-3772) Cannot click button to confirm deletion of cartridges if deleting many. When deleting many cartridges, the confirmation dialog box extends off the screen and does not show the OK button.
Firefox improperly renders Cartridge Maintenance page when Multiple Select checkbox is unchecked. If you use Firefox to view the interface and you deselect the Multiple Select option on the Cartridge Maintenance page, the browser renders the page incorrectly, displaying items in the wrong place and not preserving information. (TL0346) WORKAROUND: Click the Clear Form button to correct the display problem. Pool is restored to a cartridge resulting in data not being stored as expected.
VTL may be loaded with too many cartridges. When a VTL is edited and more virtual tapes are placed in the VTL than number of slots available, the library may fail to startup and remain in the disabled state. (TL-3624) Unmount button for virtual tapes in a virtual library does not work. You cannot manually unmount a virtual tape that resides in a virtual library. (TL-1384) WORKAROUND: Use the Manage Virtual Tapes page and remove the cartridge from the VTL instead of trying to unmount it.
Filter by Pool drop-down list on the External Data page is disabled if a pool with no replicated tapes is selected. If a pool has no replicated virtual tapes, the Filter By Pool drop-down list is disabled if selected. Use this feature only when there are virtual tapes to be displayed. (TL-6755) WORKAROUND: Navigate away and then back to the External Data page. Selecting Back button on External Data page does not allow drop-down devices to be selected directly.
PTLI reservation is unclear and may cause error. If you change a port from physical to virtual mode, an error is displayed if you attempt to create a virtual device on the port where that physical drive was connected. The reservation of the PTLI is a feature, but the reason for it may not be clear and the method to clear it up is not indicated by the error message. (TL-5946) WORKAROUND: Delete the PTLI using the Advanced link on the Manage Virtual Devices page.
Reports No destination given in Export Report. If an error occurs while connecting to a remote host or device, the Export report will not indicate this though the export fails. (TL6312) Access Control A user with an Operator account cannot perform any jobs on the media from the Virtual Media Management page regardless of the permissions granted under Access Control. (TL-8554) WORKAROUND: Use the Advanced pages to perform these jobs.
VTL Modifying the number of slots within a VTL may cause the VTL to fail. (TL-8534) WORKAROUND: If the number of slots within a VTL needs to be modified, remove and recreate the VTL. For VTL drives, the eject button on the drives page will be visible, but not usable. Attempting to use the eject button to eject a tape from a VTL drive will fail as expected since the drives are controlled by the changer.
Incorrect error message displayed if attempting to add locked cartridge to library. If the library is full when adding a cartridge to a library, check the Mounts and Locks page to determine if the cartridge is locked. If so, you may receive this message: “Unable to insert cartridge because magazine is full.” A locked cartridge cannot be added to a library, but the error message is incorrect in this case. (TL-4004) WORKAROUND: Resolve the locked condition and then add the cartridge to the library.
without all library entities (including Logical and Physical) associated with the Library definition deleted, the web interface and backend protocol layers become inconsistent. (TL-2318) WORKAROUND: Remove all associated library objects (including Physical and Logical), edit the file again, and recreate the library. VLM cannot be loaded if a pool is moved. The full path to a virtual tape is used when the virtual tape is added to a VLM.
No notification that restore fails because remote key server was not added after restoring from a disaster recovery site. The local key server should be removed prior to restoring the key database. The web interface should notify the user when a restore from a disaster recovery site fails because a local key server already exists. (TL-4399) Key database restore fails if an IP address is used instead of a hostname.
Creating cartridges in an encrypted pool when Data Encryption is not running generated confusing message. If Data Encryption is not running and you attempt to create cartridges in an encrypted pool, messages similar to the following are displayed. (TL-3048) Created 0 of 10 in P17 of size 2T successfully: Cartridge BBB000 in P17 failed encryption rc=254 Errors are logged to encry_key.log during exports and uploads. During exports and uploads, messages similar to the following are logged to encry_key.
Removing a key generator may cause a delay before cartridges can be encrypted again. After removing a key generator, if there are any key generators left, it may take up to 5 minutes before cartridges can be encrypted again. (TL-1121) If the RSA key of a remote host changes, Data Encryption operations to that host may fail. Typically, the RSA key will not change unless the operating system on that host is reinstalled.
VTSPolicy commands Q_INC and Q_DIFF variables used in the CommVault VTSPolicy backup all cartridges. Q_INC and Q_DIFF variables used in the CommVault VTSPolicy should backup the changed cartridges since the last backup. Instead, all cartridges all in the pool are backed up. (TL-2770) VTSPolicy TSM Archive command for a vault results in an error message. Issuing a VTSPolicy TSM Archive command for a vault will fail to back up the vault.
Cartridge having less than minimum size is listed as erasable in Scan/Cleanup after migration. If a cartridge is below the size specified by the cleanup_minimum_size_ MB parameter, the cartridge is scheduled to be erased by Scan/Cleanup after migration. This is incorrect behavior; it should not be scheduled for erasure. (TL-0444) Tape-to-tape export and import (native export and import) No warning is given if a job is scheduled without selecting a cartridge.
Virtual tape is skipped during a Tape-to-Tape export if it is empty. When selecting a virtual tape for Tape-to-Tape export to a library, and the virtual tape is empty, the export is not performed with the message that there is no data in the tape (even if the “Virtual Tape Format” is chosen). (TL-6540) WORKAROUND: Add data to the VT to export it. Activity log on Import/Export page is not in chronological order. The log messages are listed in random order.
Stack Exports triggered as events may fail. Stack Exports triggered as policy events may fail because there is no delay between backups. (TL-7818) WORKAROUND: Use the Job Scheduler to schedule Stacked Exports instead of Stacked Export policy events. Stacked and remote exports cannot be canceled using the UI. Once they have started, stacked and remote exports cannot be canceled using the UI. (TL-8007) In order for a stacked export to succeed, enough resources must be available.
Error, miscellaneous messages logged after successful NetBackup migration. Message similar to the following are logged in the debug log after a successful migration with NetBackup 6.5: Fri Nov 7 14:45:27 2008: [slave_signal_thread 15713] SIGCHLD received while no active child, ignoring it. Fri Nov 7 14:45:32 2008: [cli_tape 0x05000107] ERROR UNKNOWN tape command 0x44 for Id 0 Fri Nov 07 14:46:15 2008: [lsof.pl] Error: lsof.
Backup Exec 2012 incorrectly reports VT sizes for SDLT and DLT7000. Backup Exec 2012 incorrectly reports VT sizes for SDLT and DLT7000 tapes. Blank VTs show up with 16MB of free space. Tapes with data report the wrong amount of space left and space used. (TL-8063) WORKAROUND: Use the Ultrium, or Ultrium 3-SCSI drive types for correct tape usage. Restoring individual files from export that spanned files using CA ARCserve fails. (TL-6517) WORKAROUND: Restore the entire backup to obtain the single file.
Replicate job to missing or remounted data location gives vague error message. If a data location is remounted to an alternate mount point or removed, the error message from a replicate job that should use this location does not indicate the cause. Note that after a data partition has been used, it is not supported to remove it nor to change its mount point. (TL-5859) Status of replication job that failed due to an error is displayed as cancelled.
Virtual tapes are split though target vault is invalid. A virtual tape is split into multiple streams during a remote export even when the target vault is invalid. Once the file is split, replication will fail due to the vault being invalid. It should detect the error before splitting the file. (TL-4267) Rebooting while Replication is splitting files leaves a running job.
EMS If ems_keep_alive_interval is set too small, a “keep-alive lost!” message is generated. If the ems_keep_alive_interval is set too small, a very large number of Event Monitoring System (EMS) messages may be queued. This could result in a “keep-alive lost!” message being generated. (TL-8124) WORKAROUND: To avoid this keep the value of the ems_keep_alive_interval parameter just smaller than the timeout value for telnet or SSH depending on which is being used for EMS.
If a mount command is sent to a non-existent virtual tape drive, VTS reports that the tape is missing, not the drive. When a mount request is received by EMS, if the request specifies a tape drive that is not configured on the VTS, VTS sends a notification to the host that the tape is not found. It should send a notification that the drive is not found. (TL-2293) SMTP and notifications SMTP Delivery settings can be saved with no SMTP Server set.
Error message in vts-post-install.log. The message is a result of trying to change mode on a directory that does not yet exist: chmod: cannot access `/var/log/crds/rath_manager.log': No such file or directory. This message can be ignored. (TL-7380) Fatal message in vts-post-install.log. This message is a result of stopping the cpuspeed service which is intentional: - FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.el5/modules.dep: No such file or directory. This message can be ignored.
cp: cannot stat `/usr/local/tape/patch': No such file or directory ls: /vault: No such file or directory WORKAROUND: Use the button on the web interface to obtain the logs. Message logged to console and /var/log/messages until iLO is configured. Until HP-iLO is configured, the following message may continue to print: INIT: Id “s1” respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes The message is also logged to /var/log/messages with no other information.
Troubleshooting This section includes information about how to troubleshoot problems and notes about items that may need clarification. Hardware, configuration, and hardware replacement IBM iSeries v7r1 does not discover VTLs when MF52479 PTF is applied. This is realized by the failure of the strsst (menu options 1,7,2,1) failing to show tape library devices. It is recommended that this PTF not be applied to avoid losing the detection and operation of physical and virtual changers.
General operations If a cartridge contains the maximum amount of data, encrypting the cartridge will cause the cartridge limit to be exceeded. However, no error is given to indicate this situation. The cartridge can be exported but if it is imported to a cartridge of the original cartridge limit size, the import will fail. (TL-1168) WORKAROUND: Import the cartridge to a cartridge whose size is larger than the original cartridge limit size. The portmap service is turned off by default.
Error message displayed on console after the system is booted for the first time. Messages similar to the following are displayed on the console the first time VTS is booted: Mounting other filesystems: [ OK ] Starting hp-ilo:/opt/hp/hp-ilo/drivers/char/hp_ilo/CpqCiKlx.c: In functionoctl32_handler': /opt/hp/hp-ilo/drivers/char/hp_ilo/CpqCiKlx.c:680: warning: assignment makes pointer from integer without a cast /opt/hp/hp-ilo/drivers/char/hp_ilo/CpqCiKlx.
Web interface Virtual tapes cannot be renamed. You cannot rename a virtual tape. (TL-4414, EAR6411) WORKAROUND: Create new virtual tapes with the desired name using the Advanced Media Actions option on the Manage Virtual Tapes page. Changing tape library settings could cause the drives to be unusable. When a tape library was changed from random access mode to auto loader mode, the Physical Device settings could become confused.
Data Encryption (SecureVTS) Tape library must be configured for encryption to support export of encrypted tapes. The external tape library must be correctly configured to allow VTS to manage encryption. Refer to the library documentation for instructions. (TL-6435) When encrypting or decrypting a cartridge and TapeServer stops, temporary directory and file are not deleted. Do not stop TapeServer or restart VTS unless the system is quiesced.
AutoCopy An error message from ems_telnet.pl indicates that AutoCopy is not configured. For AutoCopy to work as designed, manual procedures that mount a tape must end with unmounting the tape. AutoCopy depends on receiving mount and unmount messages through EMS to work correctly, and when a tape is manually mounted, the EMS subsystem is unaware of this. When the manual operation is completed, the tape must be unmounted manually.
