3.2.4.2 CONFIGURING INSTANT MESSAGING
The Instant Messaging feature of Web ViewPoint needs the following files and processes to be present on the
server:
  The Subscription manager process
  The Messaging manager process
  Instant Messaging Database files.
The Instant Messaging database files are created by MAKEIMDB FUP Obey script that is executed when Web
ViewPoint is installed. This script can be modified to change the size of the database. The Instant Messaging
database consists of SUBDB, SUBDBA, MSGDB and UPRFDB files. SUBDB and SUBDBA store event subscription
information of various users. MSGDB stores the messages. UPRFDB stores user profile information.
The Instant Messaging engine is started during OBEY STRTWVP. This involves running SMGR (the subscription
manager). The subscription manager starts the Messaging manager (MSMGR). Web ViewPoint communicates with
these two processes and accesses Instant Messaging database files to read and send messages. SMGR uses PARAM
EVTSRC <collector> where you specify what collector to read events from. In the default configuration of Web
ViewPoint, this param is specified as $0.
To limit the usage of MSGDB, another program called ‘WBATCH’ is shipped along with Web ViewPoint. This is a
general batch program that runs every midnight and is used to clear old messages from MSGDB. It accepts PARAM
MSGS-RETENTION-PERIOD <n days> in STRTWVP that instructs it to keep the latest n days’ worth of messages and
discard the older ones. This value is provided in days (the default is 2 days).
E.g. PARAM MSGS-RETENTION-PERIOD 4
To use the WBATCH program to remove old messages, the following param is mandatory (in STRTWVP):
PARAM REMOVE-MSGS YES
Note: The space in MSGDB is shared and there is currently no user quota. This provides flexibility in managing
space amongst users that have an uneven number of messages associated with them.

3.2.4.3 PHONE CARRIERS
This screen lists the phone carriers that have been already configured. The email address corresponds to the SMS
mailbox address of the Phone carrier to which Web ViewPoint will send SMS notifications. The user’s cell phone
number along with the SMS mailbox address makes up the email address to which the notification will be sent to.
The phone carrier will then deliver this message as a SMS to the user’s phone device.
