4.10 Connection Configurations
This section describes the connection configuration procedures for the three tabs
shown on the next page.
4.10.1 Service Process Tab
If you choose to configure XSW to download collections automatically, you must
enable the service process on the PC where the database will be located. You must be
an ADMIN PC user id to perform this function as it requires administrative access for
starting, restarting and stopping the service process and writing to the registry.
View the XSW Service Process using the My Computer > Manage > Services
window provided by the PC. However, it cannot be installed and uninstalled in this
manner.
Note: The “Run as Administrator” feature may be needed in order to configure
automatic downloads on MS Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 .
Note: The Automated Collection Download feature can be installed at any time. When
first using the software, it is easier not
to use this feature. When the user is
comfortable with the collection process, this feature can be enabled.
Note: The Automated Collection Download feature works best when it is installed on
the PC where the collection data will be stored. If you are planning to use a
network server for data storage, install the XSW GUI on that machine for the
purpose of managing the automated download process. Downloads that occur
across the network are inefficient and waste network bandwidth.
Note: If the XSW service process is installed and running, the service process must be
successfully stopped and uninstalled prior to running an XSW upgrade or
uninstalling the XSW product. This can be done by using the Tools > Manage
Service Process form.
The Service Process for XSW will awaken on a cycle and poll the configured host
nodes. If any collections are ready on these nodes, it will start the xswLoader process
to download and load these collections without operator intervention. The cycle for
polling is usually 3- to 24-hours. If when the service process polls the host a collection
is actively collecting but not yet ready, it will start a shorter polling cycle until the
collection is ready.
A service process, by nature, will automatically be restarted each time the PC is
rebooted or started. However, certain events can cause it to not function, such as the
logon user password has expired. You have to consider these issues when running a
service process. Collections can always be manually downloaded.
