This document details procedures for replacing a failed

backplane in an HP StorageWorks Small Form Factor

(SFF) Disk Enclosure.

Before you begin

Observe the following precautions when replacing the backplane.

CAUTION:

Parts can be damaged by electrostatic discharge. Use proper

anti-static protection. Refer to the documentation that shipped

with your system for additional information.

The backplane is located inside the chassis of the disk enclosure.

NOTE:

Information about this component is also available on the hood

label.

CAUTION:

• These procedures require that all disk drives be removed from

the enclosure and returned to their original drive bays.

• HP recommends removing disk drives prior to removing the

enclosure from the rack. If this is not possible, two people are

required to remove the enclosure from the rack to prevent in-

jury.

Verifying component failure

Use the following methods to verify component failure:

• Analyze any failure messages received. HP fault monitoring software

provides a recommended action.

• View Onboard Administrator system and device status displays for

Critical, Major, Minor, and Warning icons. For more information,

see the Onboard Administrator user guide.

• Check the enclosure LEDs.

• Green = Normal operation

• Amber = Fault condition

8. Remove the top access panel. Removing the backplane a. Lift the access panel latch (1). The access panel will slightly disengage from the enclosure. 1. Schedule a maintenance window. b. 2. Stop all I/O to the enclosure. Slide the access panel to the rear (2) and lift away from the chassis. 3. Power down the enclosure by pressing and holding the On/Standby button on the rear of disk enclosure, until the system power LED changes from green to amber. 4.

11. Separate the drive cage from the chassis. a. Remove the six T-10 screws (three from each side of the chassis) that secure the drive cage to the chassis (1). Installing the backplane b. Grasp the top of the drive cage, slide it off the guideposts on the bottom of the chassis, and lift it out of the chassis (2). 1. Holding the backplane at an angle, align the backplane with the guides on the base of the chassis and tilt the backplane into position (1).

. Reinstall the I/O modules. 8. Reattach cabling to enclosure components. a. Open the I/O module locking lever. 9. b. Insert the module into the enclosure opening. Press the On/Standby button on the power UID bezel and hold it down long enough to power up the enclosure. Wait for the enclosure to complete the Power On Self Tests (POST). c. Push the module into the enclosure until a click is detected when fully seated. 10.
