7 Cnt Ac-J Z pair operations
This chapter provides instructions for performing Continuous Access Journal Z pair operations.
Pair operations workflow
A typical workflow for pair operations consists of the following. You must have Storage Administrator
(Remote Copy) role to perform Continuous Access Journal Z operations.
• Check pair status. Each Cnt Ac-J Z operation requires the pair to be in a specific status.
• Create the pair, in which the S-VOL becomes a duplicate of the P-VOL.
• Split the pair, which separates the P-VOL and S-VOL and allows read/write access to the
S-VOL if desired.
• Restore the pair so that the S-VOL again mirrors the on-going, current data in the P-VOL.
• Delete a pair, which removes the pair relationship from the volumes.
Checking pair status
Every Cnt Ac-J Z operation requires that pairs have a specific status. Before performing any
operation, check pair status.
• Find status requirements in the prerequisite information for each operation.
• To view a pair’s current status in the GUI, or to review status definitions, see “Monitoring pair
activity, status, license capacity” (page 79).
Creating the Cnt Ac-J Z initial copy
The pair is created when you create the initial copy. All data in the P-VOL on the primary system
is copied to the S-VOL on the secondary system. The P-VOL remains available to the host for I/O
operations.
Prerequisite information
• The initial copy must be performed from the primary system.
• S-VOLs must be offline to all hosts.
• The primary and secondary systems and remote paths must be defined. See “Configuring
primary and secondary systems for Cnt Ac-J Z ” (page 62) for more information.
• Journal volumes must be registered to the journals that are associated with pairs. See “Creating
journals and adding journal volumes ” (page 64) for more information.
• Make sure to review the information on numbering S-VOL LDEVs in the bullet on creating
multiple pairs in “Planning pair volumes ” (page 27).
• If you are creating a Cnt Ac-J Z pair for delta resync, see “Delta resync configuration ”
(page 144).
• Make sure Performance Monitor is stopped.
The following additional information may be useful to you before beginning the procedure:
• You will select the volumes you will pair by the volume’s CU and LDEV numbers. Make sure
to have this information available.
• You will assign master and restore journals to the P-VOL and S-VOL during the operation.
