HP XP7 Continuous Access Journal for Mainframe Systems User Guide (TK911-96001)

Replacing a journal volume in a journal
You can replace an in-use journal volume. The smoothest method is to add a backup journal volume
before it is needed. For more information on this, see Adding additional journal volumes to an
existing journal” (page 96).
Procedure 29 To replace a journal volume when a backup exists
1. When an additional journal volume exists in a journal, delete the in-use journal volume,
2. Resynchronize the journal.
Procedure 30 To replace a journal volume when no backup exists
1. Delete the journal.
2. Recover the blocked journal volume.
3. Register a new journal volume in a journal.
4. Recreate the pair using the new journal.
5. Assign a THP V-VOL for the journal volume.
For more information on recovering a blocked THP V-VOL, see HP XP7 Provisioning for Mainframe
Systems User Guide.
Deleting journal volumes from a journal
You can delete journal volumes as needed. This topic provides instructions and important information
for doing so.
Prerequisite information
A journal volume can only be deleted if either of the following conditions exist:
If the pair belonging to the mirror in the journal is suspended.
If the pair belonging to the mirror in the journal is deleted.
Deleting a journal volume from a journal in which a pair is registered results in the journal
volume's LDEVs becoming blockaded. You can release the blockade by formatting the LDEVs.
For instructions on formatting volumes, see HP XP7 Provisioning for Mainframe Systems User
Guide
To delete a journal volume, mirror statuses in the journal must be Initial, Stopped, or Hold
(Failure). However, if a journal uses multiple mirrors, journal volumes can only be deleted as
shown below.
