ProCurve Lightning Arrester (J8996A) Guide 2010

DESCRIPTION
The ProCurve J8996A gas-discharge lightning arrester provides high-level
protection for transmitters and receivers at RF-communication sites. In the
event of a local strike, the unit’s gas discharge tube ionizes instantaneously
to limit sudden voltage surges across the coaxial line. When connected to
a satisfactory ground, the J8996A can safely shunt up to 5000 Amperes of
impulse current away from sensitive station equipment. Lightning arresters
are not included with the antenna and must be purchased separately.

MAINTENANCE
The life expectancy of the LAC6 lightning arrester depends upon the
frequency and severity of electrostatic activity at the site. Low-level
conduction resulting from nearby storm activity has little impact on the
unit’s life, but powerful surges induced by on-site strikes will eventually
result in degraded performance or failure. Signs of degraded perfor-
mance may include reduced receiver sensitivity, above-normal VSWR
readings, and RF heating of the arrester body during transmit mode.
Should the gas discharge tube in the LAC6 fail totally, it becomes a
permanently conductive protective shunt to ground. Periodic VSWR
checks provide a good indicator of deteriorating performance, and re-
placement may be indicated following especially severe weather events
where multiple on-site strikes were known to occur.

SAFETY
WARNING: PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION REQUIRED:
Prior to installing or using this device, consult with a professional
installer trained in RF installation and knowledgeable in local regula-
tions including building and wiring codes, safety, power,indoor/outdoor
restrictions, and license requirements for the intended country. It is the
responsibility of the end user to ensure that installation and use comply
with local safety and radio regulations.
Warning: Surge protection and grounding:
When connecting
an outdoor antenna make sure that proper lightning surge protection
and grounding precautions are taken in accordance with local electrical
codes. Failure to do so may result in personal injury, re, equipment
damage, or a voided warranty. The HP ProCurve hardware warranty
does not cover damage caused by static discharge or lightning strike.
