Software Upgrade
Files Used for Upgrade
Boot files
Boot files are used at switch startup. The S7500E series support two boot files:
Main boot file: The default boot file a switch uses for startup.
Backup boot file: The boot file a switch uses for startup when the main boot file is invalid.
Patch files
Patch files are released to fix software defects. A patch file may contain one or more patches (or called
patch units). Patch files must be used together with the intended boot files to fix the defects of the latter,
but not for adding or deleting features.
Upgrade Methods
You can upgrade switch software by using one of the following methods:

Reboot the switch to make the upgrade effective.
This method interrupts services.
Patches
This method does not interrupt services, and fixes the
target boot files only.

Boot files
This method can be used when the switch cannot start
up.
NOTE:
H3C recommends you to upgrade software from the CLI when your switch operates normally.
To ensure that the active and standby main boards use the same software version, upgrade them by
using the same method.
Select proper files for upgrading by checking the version information of the boot files. For the
compatibility between the Comware version, see the hardware and software compatibility matrix in
the Release Notes.
The power supply must not be interrupted during software upgrade.
Upgrade from the CLI
The upgrade procedure on a standalone switch is different from that on an IRF virtual device. This section
describes the following topics:
Upgrading a Standalone Switch
Upgrading an IRF Virtual Device
