HP Advanced Services zl Module with Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 R2 Installation and Getting Started Guide

Hardware Installation
Overview
c2). These ports carry network traffic to and from the module. The <slot>2 port
also carries communications for the Services Management Agent (SMA),
which helps the switch to maintain the module and discover information
about it.
Caution By default, the <slot>1 port 1 is disabled and the <slot>2 port is enabled. You
must never disable the <slot>2 port, or the module will fail.
The module relies on the switch for its power, clock, and network connectivity.
HP zl switches provide very high reliability for your services with options for
redundant power and redundant connections. In addition, HP E8200 zl Series
switches can support redundant management modules. In the rare event that
an active management module fails, the HP E8200 zl switch running K.15.03
software or higher will gracefully shut down the module running the Windows
Server 2008 R2 and then bring the module and its server back up within a
minute or two. If the E8200 zl switch is running K.14.65 software, the module
will be powered down without a graceful shutdown, which can potentially
corrupt the system.
Module Operating Systems (OSs)
When the module is shipped, it includes the hardware along with:
The Application software
Called the AppSW and installed on the HDD, this is the Windows Server
2008 R2 OS. When you install your module for the first time, the module
boots directly into this OS, where it should remain during both the initial
setup and normal operations. This OS is licensed at the factory for the
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition. This module’s
AppSW does not require HP licensing and activation.
The HP Service OS
The primary and backup Service OS reside on the Compact Flash (CF).
The module is not typically booted to this OS, but it is available for
performing diagnostics in case troubleshooting is required.
Figure 1-2 shows where the Service OS and the AppSW reside on the module.
