HP Advanced Services zl Module with Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 R2 Installation and Getting Started Guide

Special Guidelines for Using the Advanced Services zl Module with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
Network Monitoring Applications
Network Monitoring Applications
The module’s HP Services Management Agent (SMA) uses WinPcap for certain
necessary communications with the switch. These communications allow you
to access the module CLI. They also report the module status to the switch,
and verify the module’s software integrity and licensing. It is very important
that you do not disrupt the SMA’s operations.
Therefore, you must proceed carefully whenever installing applications that
use WinPcap. Unless you follow the correct procedure, the new version of
WinPcap can write over the SMA’s version, causing the SMA to fail and the
module to fault.
Network monitoring applications often use WinPcap, so you must carefully
choose your application and carefully install it. It is recommended that you
use Netmon when possible. As an Application Tool already provided on the
server, Netmon will not interfere with the SMA. However, you can use appli-
cations (such as Wireshark) that include WinPcap as long as you follow the
correct installation procedure.
If you do not follow the correct procedure, you might overwrite the SMA’s
existing WinPcap version. Similarly, if you do not uninstall the application
correctly, you might uninstall WinPcap. Either error causes the SMA to fail.
For the correct procedure for installing and uninstalling applications with
WinPcap, see:
■ “Installing Network Monitoring Applications” on page 4-2
■ “Uninstalling Applications with WinPcap” on page 4-4
For help restoring your module should someone overwrite or erase the
module’s WinPcap, see “Restore a Module Reported as Failed” on page 5-11
of Chapter 5: “Troubleshooting.”
Installing Network Monitoring Applications
The rest of this section provides the correct procedure for installing an
application that includes WinPcap. Note that this procedure requires a module
reboot, so you should install the application during a service outage:
1. Verify that the application’s version of WinPcap is 4.1.2 or higher.
