Communications zl Module Powered by
Microsoft Lync
TM
The company will deploy an HP Survivable Branch Communications zl Module
(SBM) powered by Microsoft Lync to provide resilient voice communications
for the branch. The SBM includes these components:
Microsoft Lync services—The SBM’s Front-End and Mediation Lync servers
integrate with the main office Standard or Enterprise Lync Server Pool.
They handle communication services for up to 1000 users at the branch
office.
HP Media Gateway —The HP Media Gateway enables local Lync users to
communicate with the public switched telephone network (PSTN) over
T1, E1, J1, or analog FXO lines (depending on the cards that are installed
in the module). The SBM can also provide FXS interfaces for legacy
devices.
With these components, the SBM provides survivability; if the WAN connec-
tion to the main office data center fails, the SBM routes all calls over its PSTN
connection, so branch users can still contact both outside telephone numbers
and other Lync users. The SBM automatically detects and responds to the
failure and the restoration of the WAN link without your completing any
special configuration.
The SBM will also help optimize the company’s WAN:
The SBM will establish local Lync calls locally, reducing the WAN traffic.
The SBM will route local PSTN calls locally, removing those calls from the
WAN link.
The company can create least-cost routing policies to route calls over the
PSTN gateway to which those calls are local.
To continue operating during a WAN outage, the SBM requires access to a DNS
server. The HP Advanced Services zl Module with Windows Server 2008 R2
provides this service, ensuring true survivability for the solution.
