1 Hardware Installation Overview The HP Advanced Services zl Module with VMware® vSphere™ Platform (J9748A) has an ESXi host pre-installed at the factory, and is ready for module installation in an HP E5400 zl or E8200 zl Series switch. The module automatically boots the ESXi host. You access the ESXi direct console user interface (DCUI) through the switch CLI.
Hardware Installation Installing the Module Installing the Module Installation Precautions Static electricity can severely damage the electronic components on the module. When handling and installing the module, follow these procedures to avoid damage from static electricity: • Handle the module by its bulkhead or edges and avoid touching the components and the circuitry on the board.
Hardware Installation Installing the Module Installing the Module 1. Confirm that the switch time is set and correct. For information on setting the switch time, see the Installation and Getting Started Guide, available at www.hp.com/networking/support. 2. If installing in an unused slot, use a Torx T-10 or flat-bladed screwdriver to unscrew the screws in the cover plates over the slot where you will install the module. Store the cover plates for possible future use. 3.
Hardware Installation Installing the Module Verifying That the Module Is Installed Correctly If you have installed the module in a powered off HP zl switch, power up the switch. After the switch powers up, the module will begin to power up. If you have installed the module in a powered on switch, the module begins to power up immediately. Caution Do not remove the module or interrupt the power up process in any way. The boot process may take several minutes to complete.

2 Getting Started First Steps You can now connect to the ESXi host running on the module. Once you are connected, HP strongly recommends that you: Change the default password Set the correct time on the ESXi host ESXi Host Factory Defaults ESXi Host Setting Installed Setting Management Automatic Interface IP Address configuration (DHCP) Purpose and Use This interface connects to your network and carries management traffic.
Getting Started First Steps Identifying the Module Interfaces There are three ports on the module, two internal and one external. Two10-GbE wire-speed, internal ports connect to the switch backplane. These switch ports are 1 and 2 — for a zl module in slot C of a switch, these ports are ports C1 and C2. The ports are untagged members of VLAN 1, by default. On the ESXi host, by default, port vmnic1, switch port 2, is configured and is the default management interface port.
Getting Started First Steps To view this module’s current status, use the show services f command. HP Switch# show services f Status and Counters - Services Module F Status HP Services zl Module J9483A Versions Current status : A.01.09 : hardware ready For more information, use the show commands in services context A Current status of hardware ready indicates that the ESXi host is booting or running. Connecting to a Management Interface You have several options.
Getting Started First Steps Accessing the Direct Console 1. From the switch CLI Manager/Configure context, enter Services tech followed by two or more carriage returns. HP Switch(config)# services f tech The menu interface displays the management interface IP address, if set by a DHCP server on your network when the module is installed. If no DHCP server is found, a null IP address (0.0.0.0) is displayed and the host is assigned the link local IP address, which is in the subnet 169.254.x.
Getting Started First Steps Changing the Default Password Important To protect your network, HP strongly recommends that you immediately change the default password for the ESXi host module. 1. Using the direct console, select the Configure Password in the System Customization pane. 2. Press Enter and follow the instructions to enter a new password. Passwords ought to be more than eight characters long and include at least one uppercase character, one lowercase character, and one digit.
Getting Started First Steps Adding or Changing the Management Interface IP Address Important The default management interface port, vmnic1, is an internal 10-GbE port on the switch backplane, switch port 2, an untagged member of the default VLAN (VLAN 1) . By default, the ESXi host uses DHCP to acquire an IP address for this port. If successful, the management interface IP address is displayed when you access the direct console from the switch CLI. If no IP address is assigned, 0.0.0.
Getting Started Next Steps Next Steps Installing vSphere Client HP recommends installing vSphere Client to manage your ESXi host module. Download vSphere Client using a web browser to this address: http://. For example, if your ESXi host management interface IP address was 192.168.1.1 you would enter http://192.168.1.1.
Getting Started Next Steps Installing ESXi Upgrades and Updates Upgrading the ESXi host module using a CD/DVD requires a powered USB CD/DVD drive or a powered USB hub between the module and a USB CD/ DVD drive. You also can upgrade your ESXi host using Update Manager in vCenter or by using the vCLI. For more information, please see the Installation and Getting Started Guide on the web, available through www.hp.com/networking/support.
3 Troubleshooting Quick Tips Detailed troubleshooting information for the module is available in its Installation and Getting Started Guide at www.hp.com/networking/support. Some basic tips appear below: Caution The module fails to boot or the Module Status LED is not solid green Be patient. The module takes several minutes to boot initially, and you must not interrupt this process. • Check the switch’s software version. It must be K15.05 or greater.
Troubleshooting Quick Tips HP Switch# show services Installed Services Slot Index Description E 1. Services zl Module HP Switch# Name svcs-mod This above message appears when other services are installed in the switch. The ESXi host module is independent of the switch services, so it is not listed.
Troubleshooting Quick Tips I want to see the status and version of the ESXi host module, but the output of the show services details command tells me that the hardware is ready. What does this mean? Here is what you would see running the above command for an ESXi host module in slot F: HP Switch(config)# show services f details Status and Counters - Services Module F Status HP Services zl Module J9483A Versions Current status : A.01.
Troubleshooting HP Customer Support Services The module fails to receive a DHCP address. • Confirm that the switch port 2 is an untagged member of a switch VLAN where a DHCP server can be reached. If not, from the switch CLI mange/configure context, use this command, vlan untagged 2 to move this port to the VLAN where the DHCP server can be accessed. • Next, restart the module by entering services reload.
