SBM Role in a Microsoft UC&C Solution
SBM Role in a Microsoft UC&C Solution
The SBM acts within a complete UC&C solution to provide resilient commu-
nication and voice services for a branch office.
Microsoft Lync Architecture
To better explain how the SBM fits within the Lync architecture, this guide
will first provide a brief overview of this architecture, including illustrations
and definitions of various terms that you will encounter in this guide. This
explanation is intentionally simple and brief; for complete information, refer
to Microsoft documentation.
If you already understand the Lync solution and terminology well, move on
directly to “SBM Role” on page 1-9, which explains the SBM’s role within the
solution.
Services
A Lync solution provides communication services for users with Lync clients.
Microsoft offers several types of clients, including the Microsoft Lync 2010
Phone Edition, which runs on IP phones, and the Microsoft Lync Client 2010,
which can run on several Windows and Mac OSs. Refer to the Microsoft Web
site if you need help selecting or configuring clients for the branch site.
Communication services might include:
■ Calls to other Lync users in the domain, which are called peer-to-peer calls
■ Calls to any number reachable through the PSTN
■ Instant messaging
■ Audio conferencing
■ Video conferencing
■ Web conferencing
The solution also provides presence, which indicates a user’s availability and
willingness to communicate in any of the ways listed above. Users can set their
presence manually, and Lync can also discover it automatically based on the
user’s login status, calendar, preferences, and so forth. The solution handles
communications intelligently, allowing, for example, calls to be forwarded to
voice mail, a different number, or a different method of contact based on the
user’s preferences.
