SBM Overview
SBM Role in a Microsoft UC&C Solution
The SBM addresses this issue, providing all the services necessary for Enter-
prise Voice locally at the branch office. Branch users are assigned to the SBM
as their Lync Server Front-End Server (registrar), and the SBM also provides
the Mediation Server and PSTN gateway.
Figure 1-3. Lync Survivable Branch Architecture
Within the Lync topology the SBM occupies a different position from a
traditional Lync Server. Instead of being associated with a site, the SBM is
associated with a branch site, which is always defined within a parent central
site. While the SBM provides voice on its own, it draws on the central site for
other services such as presence, audio/video conferencing, and communica-
tions with remote users (users who connect through the Internet). In addition,
the SBM replicates the central management store, defined at the central site,
on its own SQL database.
Clients
The SBM supports these clients:
Devices that run the Microsoft Lync client (sometimes called a softphone)
Microsoft Lync-certified phones
Refer to the Microsoft Web site for a list of certified phones and devices for
the Lync client (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/lync/gg278164.aspx).
