Design Considerations
Planning Call Capacity
Important In addition to these design considerations, there are several tasks that you
must always complete to ready your solution for the SBM deployment. These
tasks include, among others, adding the SBM object to the domain and to the
Lync Server topology. The next chapter provides a complete list and explana-
tions.
Planning Call Capacity
The SBM is designed to provide Lync services for a branch or satellite office.
You should plan at least one SBM per remote site. In most cases, a single SBM
provides adequate performance for the entire branch. However, you must
assess your requirements and plan the deployment to meet them. In this
section, you learn about the SBM’s performance capabilities: specifically, the
number of Lync users and calls that it can support.
Within its pool the SBM supports up to 1000 Lync users, each of which can
place a call simultaneously. However, only 120 of those 1000 simultaneous
calls can be placed through the SBM’s public switched telephone network
(PSTN) connection. In addition, the telephony cards that you select might limit
the number of supported PSTN calls.
Consider management options for the SBM and
communicate them to the appropriate
administrator.

If you have a Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP) solution, install the SBM’s
management information bases (MIBs) on it.
