Creating or Editing a QoS Marking
QoS Markings can be used for classification and marking of ingress packets for QoS processing to your
network. See “QoS Marking” on page 2-25 for more general information about this feature.
Ingress packet priority settings can be retained, mapped to different priority settings, or in the case of
802.1Q/p, removed. Client packets can be marked based on 802.1p, DiffServ, IP Precedence, and ToS
standards.
In addition, you can apply VLAN tags based on packet information. VLAN tagging based on packet
information is useful for separating application data on the same device. For example, a mixed-mode
device, like a PDA with a soft-phone application, can have data traffic sent down one VLAN and
priority VoIP traffic sent down a different VLAN.
Ingress packets with VLAN tags can retain their 802.1p settings while their VLAN ID is replaced. This
includes packets with a VLAN ID of zero (0) also called the null VLAN ID. The VLAN ID and 802.1p
priority settings will not be overwritten by the VLAN settings in an Access Policy. However, the QoS
Marking capability to manipulate VLAN tags is not intended as a replacement for the Access Policy’s
forced VLAN tagging option.
Note:
Ingress packets are incoming packets on an Access Controller’s downlink port.
To create a new QoS Marking, click the New QoS Marking button found either on the QoS Markings page
or under the QoS Markings tab on the New Access Policy or Edit Access Policy pages.
The New QoS Markings page appears (Figure 4-31) with blank fields.
The Edit QoS Marking page is almost identical to the New QoS Marking page, except that the settings
are displayed for the QoS Marking you have selected, and a
Save As Copy button is provided.
