Overview
Radio Ports as Layer 2 Devices
ProCurve Radio Ports are typically Layer 2 devices that use IEEE 802.3af-
compliant Power over Ethernet (PoE). They have no IP address and no user
interface. ProCurve Radio Ports, attached directly to the 5300xl switch or to
infrastructure switches, communicate with a Wireless Edge Services xl Mod-
ule over an untagged interface using a custom protocol. This protocol encap-
sulates station wireless traffic as well as management, control, and status
information sent between a radio port and a Module.
To control a radio port, a Module must have network connectivity to it. A radio
port VLAN, containing the downlink port as a tagged member and the down-
link radio port, connected to the radio port on the same or an infrastructure
switch, as an untagged member, supplies this connectivity. See Figure 1 for a
summary of the 5300xl VLAN configurations required to support Layer 2 radio
port and the internal Module uplink and downlink port communications in a
Wireless Edge Services xl Module.
