Example PCM+ Agent Module Deployment
Example PCM+ Agent Module Deployment
The following example shows a PCM+ Agent Module managed through a
firewall by a PCM+ 3.10 Server. The PCM+ Agent Module is in a private
network, that is, a network that uses IP addresses that are “unambiguous
within an enterprise, but may be ambiguous between enterprises” (see RFC
1918, Address Allocation for Private Internets (February 1996)). The PCM+
3.10 Server uses a public network, that is, a network that requires “IP
addresses that are globally unambiguous” (RFC 1918 (February 1996)). This
network may be, for example, the Internet or a WAN.
The following benefits can be realized using this approach:
■ A PCM+ 3.10 Server can manage all devices in your network including
those in a public network and those in a private network.
■ Management traffic between the PCM+ 3.10 Server and the PCM+ Agent
Module are encrypted (by default) over the public network.
■ An Agent-initiated connection can be used to establish a connection to
the PCM+ 3.10 Server, reducing or eliminating holes in the firewall pro-
tecting the private network.
The following example assumes that the private network is already operating.
The PCM+ Agent Module is added to the private network and connects
through a firewall (an HP ProCurve Threat Management Services (TMS) zl
Module) to the PCM+ 3.10 Server on a public network.
In this example we show the necessary set up for both an Agent-initiated
connection as well as for a Server-initiated connection.
Before You Begin
Keep in mind the following operational notes when making your plans.
■ The primary interface for managing the Agent on the PCM+ Agent Module
is the Agent Web browser interface, reached at
https://<Agent IP address>:<Port> (the default port is 8080). This interface
allows you to configure the connection type as well as the Agent creden-
tials required to communicate with the PCM+ 3.10 Server (see “Managing
Remote Agents Using the Web” in the chapter “Configuring and Managing
Agents” in the HP ProCurve Manager Network Administrator's Guide
Version 3.10. This interface can be accessed using a Web browser on the
private network or, when firewall access policies are configured, through
a Web browser on the public network.
