Riverbed® Steelhead® RiOS® Application Administrator's Guide 2010-10

Managing the HP AllianceONE Extended Services zl Module with the Riverbed® Steelhead® RiOS® Application
Overview
For best security practices, management user accounts should always be
password protected.
In-band or Out-of-band
You can access the CLI in-band or out-of-band:
■ Out-of-band—For out-of-band management, you use the serial cable that
shipped with the switch to connect your management station’s console
port directly to the console port on the 5400zl or 8200zl switch. You then
use terminal session software (such as TeraTerm or Microsoft HyperTer-
minal) to access the switch. You should configure the terminal session
software to use the following settings:
• 9600 bps
• 8 data bits
• No parity
•1 stop bit
• XON/XOFF flow control
■ In-band—With in-band access, you use the Ethernet connection on your
management station to contact the switch over the network at its man-
agement IP address. To access the CLI, you can use Telnet or Secure Shell
(SSH).
Telnet is not a secure protocol. If you use Telnet, your management
session is transmitted in plaintext over the Ethernet cables. As a result,
someone could eavesdrop on these communications and get information
about your switch or Steelhead Application settings.
With SSH, on the other hand, your communications are encrypted. You
can use an application such as PuTTY to establish an SSH session with
the switch. (Some setup on the switch is required to support SSH. See the
HP ProCurve Switch Access Security Guide for more information.)
Command Syntax Statements
This manual uses the following conventions for CLI commands:
Syntax: ip <dhcp | <IP address> <subnet mask> >
Syntax: ip default-gateway <gateway IP address> [metric]
