Overview
Accelerating WAN Connections
■ Zone policy—A zone policy defines which packets are selected, based
on the source zone and the destination zone. The source and the destina-
tion must be different zones. That is, the HP switch will not intercept
packets that are exchanged between switch ports that are assigned to the
same zone.
The zone policy also specifies the direction of the packets—unidirec-
tional—and the action that should be taken—intercept.
Example Deployments
As mentioned earlier, the Extended Services zl Module with Steelhead Appli-
cation will typically be installed at a branch office. Depending on whether or
not the branch office network is using multiple VLANs, the Extended Services
zl Module with Steelhead Application will be deployed in one of the following
configurations:
■ Bridging only
■ Routing
■ External routing
Bridging Only. In this configuration, the HP 5400zl or 8200zl switch is not
operating as a routing switch and, in most cases, includes only one VLAN.
Branch offices that have small networks will likely use this configuration.
Figure 1-2 shows a bridging only configuration.
