Introduction
Overview of the HP SBM
The HP Survivable Branch Communication zl Module (SBM) powered by
Microsoft Lync
TM
is a survivable branch appliance for the Microsoft Lync
Server 2010 solution.
The SBM is installed in an HP 8200 zl Switch Series or HP 5400 zl Switch Series
switch at the branch office. The SBM includes a Windows Server 2008 R2 that
runs as the base OS. Running on this server, is a Lync Server 2010 Front-End
Server that integrates with the main office Standard or Enterprise Lync Server
Pool and handles communication services for up to 1000 users at a branch
office.
The SBM also includes a Lync Server Mediation Server and an HP Media
Gateway, which enable local Lync users to communicate with the public
switched telephone network (PSTN). The SBM connects to the PSTN using
T1, E1, J1, or analog FXO cards that are installed in the module. The module
also supports FXS cards for integrating analog phones or fax machines into
the system.
The SBM also supports SIP trunking for companies that want to use an Internet
telephony service provider (ITSP) to forward external calls rather than a PSTN
carrier. In this case, the SBM routes the external calls to a WAN router that
connects to the ITSP instead of through its own PSTN interfaces.
Finally, the SBM provides survivability; if the WAN connection to the main
office data center fails, the SBM routes all calls over its PSTN connection, so
branch users can still contact both outside telephone numbers and Lync users
within the branch. The SBM automatically detects that the failover and the
restoration of the WAN link without your completing any special configura-
tion.
The SBM is managed through an easy to use Command Line Interface (CLI)
and Web browser interface. The Windows Server 2008 R2 OS running on the
module can also be accessed with Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).
