Overview of the SBM
The HP Survivable Branch Communication zl Module (SBM) powered by
Microsoft Lync
TM
is a branch office survivable voice gateway for the Microsoft
Lync solution.
The SBM includes a Windows Server 2008 R2 that runs as the base OS. Running
on this server, is a Microsoft Lync Server 2010 that integrates with the main
office Standard or Enterprise Lync Server Pool and handles services for the
branch office.
The SBM also includes a mediation server and a media gateway, which enable
local Microsoft Lync devices to communicate with the public switched tele-
phone network (PSTN). The SBM connects to the PSTN using T1, E1, or analog
FXO cards that are installed in the module. The module also supports FXS
cards for integrating analog phones or fax machines into the system.
Finally, the SBM provides survivability; if the WAN connection to the main
office data center fails, the SBM routes all calls over its PSTN connection.
The SBM is managed through an easy to use Command Line Interface (CLI)
and Web browser interface. The Windows Server 2008 R2 OS running on the
module can also be accessed with Remote Desktop.
Table 1-1 lists the tasks that you will perform to get your SBM up and running.
If you want to start immediately, move to “Update the Switch Software” on
page 1-5. You can obtain more details about the SBM in “SBM Hardware” on
page 1-2 and “SBM Operating Systems (OSs)” on page 1-3.
